Thank you to everyone here who provided advice over the last few years as we've planned work on our house. Our neighbourhood (Canadian prairies city) is 1960s mid-century with predominantly original cedar lapboard siding (with some stucco and vinyl updates), so we really wanted to continue to fit in, but with a cleaner, more modern update. Our home was pretty drab compared to most on the block (we bought it two years ago). The last thing we wanted was the trendy white-and-black flip look. We went with Royal Celect siding (cellular composite) in grove colour. It's much thicker and more durable than vinyl, and uses an interlocking system that's really nice. We looked at and considered Hardie, but there are too many drawbacks. We love the colour, it's more green under sunlight or white light, but in the shade it takes on a blue-green tinge. In my mind it reminds me of the Pacific Northwest redwood forests. We considered navy blue, but there are a number of homes in the area like that, and unfortunately, we could only get mid-quality vinyl with that colour. We really waffled about what to do with the front door—storm doors are ubiquitous in the area, but we decided to scrap that and instead go for full glass. Because we live so far north, we get very little light in the winter, so we wanted to maximize that. We also took the opportunity to better seal up the main floor. We already had 2" foam exterior insulation below the siding, and made sure everything was in good shape, along with new doors, soffits, attic venting, etc. The basement is already spray-foamed, so great insulation there. Now the plan in the summer is to add a bunch of greenery to the front yard (there is a stone garden wall in front of the house on both the left and right, so put in some bushes, flowers, etc). There is also a big Ash tree in front that's not in frame. Unfortunately in the winter there is not much we can do to spice things up, haha (so...7+ months per year of snow). We might put some cedars in along the right side of the property to put a barrier between our lawn and the neighbour's driveway, as well.
