Mid-Century Interiors: 3 Characteristics
March 18, 2025 - While many might take this to mean that mid-century homes are minimalist, that would be a mischaracterization; mid-century homes embrace modern conveniences, while shying away from excess. r/midcenturymodern on Reddit: What qualifies a house as MCM?
August 31, 2024 -
I posted the other day about our new 1963 tri-level home, and the only comment was that it was mid-century, but not MCM. How is that distinction determined? (I'm a fan; obv not an expert..)

Modernism is a collection of specific design styles, not necessarily a time period, though those mostly styles arose in the late 40sβearly 70s. Look at home of Palm Springs for some quintessential examples. Things like open floor plans, large windows or even glass walls, flat or angled planar roofs, nontraditional home building materials like steel and concrete, and unorthodox shapes. Many homes throughout the time period and later take cues from these styles without fully being modern. You can look up things like international style, Usonian, and atomic to see examples. My home is an early 70s split level with a few modern elements mixed into a more traditional form, so while itβs on the cusp of the time period and has some design elements, itβs not a midcentury modern home.

March 31, 2025 - The exterior of mid-century modern homes also emphasizes minimalism and distinct angles. The houses often appear boxy and don't always reflect the interior. For example, large, scenic windows might not be visible from the street, and the open floor plan and layered floors likewise aren't discernible from the exterior.
