West Elm Mid Century Desk - is the quality good enough to justify the price?

DISCLAIMER: I am not an owner of this desk. I love to talk about things I don't know about. Anyways: As a huge midcentury modern fan, I can't say that I love West Elm's wood midcentury pieces. I've seen these pieces on facebook marketplace and they get chips easily. It looks like the veneer chips over time, and it's not very flattering. I also think that $700 for a desk is insane. Here's my takeaway: BUY IT IF: You need a desk ASAP, the price isn't a thought for you, you have other west elm furniture from this line. DONT BUY IF: You can wait on the desk, you want something cheaper. Or you find it secondhand on facebook marketplace. I've seen AMAZING true midcentury desks on facebook marketplace and craigslist for $700 if not cheaper, unfortunately that's just out of my price range. The desk I currently use is a sturdy desk that I got for $40 - it's so strong, it once held two moving men + a dresser (they used it as a stepstool haha) More on reddit.com

For the first time ever, I’ll be working a job that gives me several work from home days a week. Most of my apartment is mid century furniture, so I’d like something that matches the style. The issue is that most mid century desks weren’t designed with computers in mind. They’re too thin for a second monitor, and don’t leave enough space for a mouse.

I’d like to buy something that’s well made, but I’m not looking for anything extravagant. I’d like to avoid buying anything poorly made, like what I’ve heard from wayfarer. So any brand recommendations would be great.

Any tips would be much appreciated, thanks.

Speaking as someone who spent way too long shopping for an MCM desk (except I needed a small footprint one!), you have three options: go custom, shop modern MCM style somewhere like Article or West Elm, or wait for your secondhand Goldilocks desk to turn up. If I were you, I’d hunt around for an “MCM executive desk” on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, etc. Executive desks are huge!
