From preserved masterworks by the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright and The Harvard Five to carefully updated modern homes, these midcentury designs showcase the current conviction that the '40s, '50s, and '60s were revolutionary moments in American architecture.
I think we need a lesson on what Mid Century Modern actually is
Mid Century Modern is an aesthetic, a style. Just because something was produced post-WWII through 1970's doesn't automatically classify the item as MCM. This video explains the style better than I could here with my limited typing and grammar skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DsIkNuqj-U&ab_channel=JoanaAlmeida More on reddit.com
What is everyone's opinion on the mid-century modern style, would you like to see this brought back or should it be left behind?
Do you think flat roofs and window walls have fallen out of style? Modern houses contain many of the features that were made popular in the 1950s. Now they paint them all black and grey and add a rooftop patio and a bigger garage More on reddit.com
Does anyone have experience buying/living in a mid-century modern home in the Northeast
Insulation may be in your future. There are many ways to go about it. Have in reserve 50,000 dollars or more, for changes you may desire over the coming five years. Simply having, or planning for an electric vehicle is reason to upgrade to 200 amp service. Each house is different, with its own problems. More on reddit.com
Does anyone here live in an MCM home? Willing to share what it's like?
1963 house, one of three in my neighborhood in this style. Love: It is unique (except for being one of three) It is very open, the living room is huge, well suited to parties Daylight basement (finished in wood paneling) is like a party grotto, funky and inviting with access to back yard in good weather It stands out more with every year as the outer suburbs are overrun by faux Craftsman Mini-McMansions Ready availability of used and new-reproduction mid-century furniture, furnishings, and lighting means it isn't too difficult to furnish the house in correct period stuff (although geez, it's expensive!) Hate: Old infrastructure - wiring, plumbing, ductwork. It's all slowly wearing out and is a giant pain to work on. As someone else said, no walls are true or plumb. And many previous-owner work has had to be fixed or ripped out because it wasn't period-correct Flat roof with skylights is an absolute nightmare in Seattle's climate. There's been a new leak every other year since I moved in. some old and energy-inefficient windows can not be upgraded without seriously compromising the look Lack of storage - closets are small, and few. One whole bedroom is used for storage for our outdoor equipment Known tested asbestos popcorn ceiling in the basement. I plan on removing it soon, when I can devote the necessary time to do it (I'm figuring a week). In general, a couple of the really obvious mid-century design elements also contribute to making it hard to own and maintain a mid-century home. The classic floor-to-ceiling single-pane windows are often the most noticeable and obvious style element after the roofline. Keeping them original for the looks will cost you in cold climates. Replacing them with modern efficient windows that look close to original will cost you as well. Roof maintenance is probably next: Live under trees that drop leaves/needles, and/or a rainy climate and expect to go up there to clean the roof and gutters often. A lot of mid-century houses used hidden gutters instead of a tacked-on metal external gutter. The fascia board was tall, above the edge of the roof, and the downspouts penetrated the eave. These are weak points, prone to leaking and clogging. The electrical code was also far different back then, and common wiring practices then may make it difficult to upgrade or add modern electronics/automation. My house, for example, has something wonky where too many neutrals are tied together (I think), and in some locations GFCI outlets just will not frikken' work. And the panel is a mess, I think mostly the fault of some previous owner that wanted to create space for several added circuits beyond what it originally had. More on reddit.com

The Timeless Allure of My Favorite Design Style: Mid-Century Modern — Nicole Bozzani
January 28, 2024 - It’s still very much part of my personal style when it comes to design and decor. I love it so much that it’s just one of the aesthetics that you’ll find me screaming loudly about when an HGTV designer wants to tear it apart for some modern farmhouse bullsh*t. Mid-Century Modern design emerged in the mid-20th century, primarily between the 1930s and 1960s.

May 16, 2024 -
It seems like so many people post here with the same old comments about how they’re wrong about something being mid century modern. At this point it seems like something can only be one of three well known brands or there’s arguments started in the thread. Is mid century modern not, by common definition, furniture produced from the end of WWII to the early 70s characterized by organic or streamlined furniture commonly made of wood, leather, or metal? So I’m asking the experts here what YOU consider mid century modern.

But Nelson, in addition to designing modern icons like the Bubble Lamps, brought true revolutionaries including Noguchi, the Eames, Girard and more into the fold at Herman Miller, resulting in some of the most famous pieces of furniture of 20th century, from the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman to the Noguchi Table. ... The MCM market is splintered today, between super pricey originals that were created by those aforementioned design houses (and other less prominent ones) during the actual time period to reissues from those same heritage brands today and knock-off reproductions. And of course, there are new designs today from stores that are in the style of MCM and heavily influenced by its design tenants.

Tracing the History of Boulder Crest, a Storied—and on the Market—Altadena Home - Dwell
1 week ago - Altadena’s Boulder Crest home blends Arts and Crafts elements with midcentury-modern architecture. Greg told me his childhood memories of Millard Canyon, but they don’t reach back to the original Boulder Crest; wildfire—an ever-present threat in these foothills, and one we have all come to know too well this year—claimed that earlier incarnation. Boulder Crest was originally completed in 1912 as a "no expenses spared" three-story Swiss-style lodge commissioned by Los Angeles clothier and conservationist Reinhardt J.
