Quite a few folks have been frustrated by the 'stuck collet' problem on the m12 and m18 die grinders.
If your collet and collet nut are still two separate pieces, then snap them together like shown here. This solves the problem entirely.

June 29, 2021 - Milwaukee used a different style of collet, it doesn't act like the standard collet found in standard die grinders, in this one, when you loosen the collet nut it has not released the tool yet, you need to spin it open until it is tight again and loosen it once more and then it will be free.
