Adding a wire wheel to my old Craftsman bench grinder | Sawmill Creek Woodworking Community
June 18, 2020 - Click to expand... I’ve used wire wheels on various 3600 rpm bench grinders for decades. Although they do throw wires I think they are perfectly safe IF used with the proper protection (full face shield and leather gloves with gauntlets.) I keep the PPE within arm’s reach of the grinder.

Recommend Wire Wheel for bench grinder | The Hobby-Machinist
January 14, 2023 - The one I use is a 6" Harbor Freight grinder that came with the house. I've been using Performax wheels from Menards (don't think you have those in MD yet...didn't when I lived there)...they aren't expensive, but seem to last just fine. I have a couple of nice, expensive Baldors, but I keep one of those for actual grinding and the other for polishing and deburring. I have another cheap, no-name grinder (6") that I have a bronze wire wheel on one side and a polishing wheel on the other for delicate stuff.

r/Machinists on Reddit: Is it wrong to use a wire brush wheel on a bench grinder for deburring?
July 16, 2023 -
I'm a maintenance tech with no machining background. In the plant I work, we make a lot of custom parts -- mostly just brackets and keys. Over the weekend, while working with a coworker who has a lot of machining experience (used to do custom motorcycle jobs), I was deburring a freshly-trimmed piece of steel on our 10'' bench grinder's wire brush, as I have done in the past for other things. I was told to use the belt sander instead because the wire brush "would cut grooves". After work, I looked up what a wire brush was for, and everything I've seen included deburring in the list.
So, is my experienced machinist coworker correct in that I shouldn't be using a wire brush to deburr parts?

Wire wheels aren't as controllable, because the wires hit all over, not just the very edge/burr, and this leaves a zone of pits/scratches/grooves along the edge where the wires were impacting. It doesn't remove material like an abrasive does, it's effectively a million tiny hammers smashing at the burr until it either is flattened, or breaks off. Using a belt sander is more controlled, and only the parts of the metal you're actually intending to remove get hit and affected by the belt, leaving everything right up to the edge unaffected. The abrasive particles actually cut the burr away. I use the wire wheel only when the parts I'm dealing with are already ugly or are going to get some other form of finishing afterwards, so the carnage left by the wire wheel won't be noticeable. There are legitimate uses for a wire wheel. It's great for removing paint and coatings without removing any underlying metal, because of the lack of cutting action, but it does still affect the surface finish, especially on softer materials like aluminum. Tldr: You can technically use a wire wheel for deburring, but it's crude and doesn't leave a fine, consistent finish.

Get yourself a Scotch Brite wheel, it’ll soften the edges nicely and doesn’t bite in.
