I used to have a cheap lighted mirror from Amazon, and then one day a spirit of insanity came over me and I bought the SimpleHuman lighted mirror and I will never be without it again. The magnification (5x) is perfection for all kinds of work - both detail eyeshadow work and things like putting foundation on. I thought I was going to be annoyed that it didn't have a 1x mirror too but I haven't missed it for a moment. The light is a really phenomenal quality and does a good job at simulating natural light so you don't end up with blush disasters and the like. The light has a sensor so it comes on when you sit in front of it, and is battery operated so no plugging it in. The only things I don't like about it are that if you sit in front of it for 20-30 min everyday to do your makeup the battery life is much shorter than advertised. Also, when charging, it's unwise to leave it plugged it and then go away for the day or something. For some reason, I noticed on occasion that when I left it plugged in for way longer than it needed to charge, it will charge fully and then drain the battery entirely (and this is a problem I've had with multiple mirrors, as I exchanged the first one for this reason because I thought it was defective.) It's a little bizarre but not really much of a hassle just to watch it and unplug it when it is done charging. But yeah, I'll never do my makeup another way again. If it broke out of warranty (5 years) I would rebuy. If you have a giftcard to Brookstone that will at least defray the cost I would encourage you to go for nothing but the best, you really won't regret it. In my experience, a lighted mirror does not provide enough light to the rest of the room. After living in enough apartments that had completely inadequate lighting, if I have the option, I’ll always go for more light. It’s something I don’t think people take into consideration until they need it- a water leak at the toilet (or in this case the washer too) but you need your phone as a flashlight to try to see where it’s coming from, a pet vomits on the floor but you can’t see well enough to tell if it’s completely cleaned up, dropped an earring or a ring and, again, have to get out your phone or a flashlight to see where it rolled.
