They’re as useless as usps is as a whole. They’ll tell you after the 6 months passes that basically it’s your fault something was lost. Zero accountability. They never look into anything it’s just an automated system. Answer from UncannyAnomaly on reddit.com

Cancelling Missing Mail Search Request
Not sure about that, but I did it. Deleted the old one and create a new missing mail search request. Hopefully that will “REALERT” them again and make them find my parcel. Mine was stuck since June 3rd 😑 More on reddit.com

Missing mail request error
Had the same problem getting an "Error: JS400 - Descriptor Add Failed" error message every time I tried to submit the form for a couple of days. The solution - I finally opened an "incognito window" in Chrome which got rid of the error message. However, when I clicked on the "verify address" button ( just to be safe, to check the information was correct before submitting it), It kept changing the city, state and zip of my address to the one for the post office I'd gone to, which is in another town; claiming the zip code I'd entered for the recipient wasn't correct and recommending the exact same address but with a zip + 4 zipcode rather than the 5 digit zip code I'd entered; and changing the insurance to "yes" when I'd selected "no". I pressed the "edit" button rather than the "submit" button, naturally, and every time I'd fix everything, it would fix two out of the three, and when I fixed the wrong one, one of the other ones would revert back to the incorrect info. I kept hitting the edit button, correcting the errors, over and over again. It was like playing "Whack-a-Mole". After correcting the random, rotating errors about a half dozen times, I finally decided that it was more important that it accepted both of the corrected addresses, and the Post Office could deal with the claim that it was insured when it wasn't, cause if I corrected that, it would just screw up one of the addresses and tell me the information was incorrect and that a successful search would not be able to be performed. With both addresses correct, it was happy, accepted the info, said the search had been started, and said I would periodically be updated via email to let me know that status of the search. It also brought me to a page with the case number and date submitted on it, and when I clicked on it, brought up a page with the details I had entered, which were still correct, other than that stupid "insured?" field that it insisted on altering on it's own. So, that's how I finally solved the "Error: JS400 - Descriptor Add Failed" error that kept coming up, and was finally able to submit a "Missing Mail Report" request form - IF YOU'RE USING GOOGLE CHROME, YOU NEED TO OPEN AN INCOGNITO WINDOW TO GET RID OF THE ERROR. r/usps_complaints on Reddit: Has anyone had success with a "Missing Mail Search" on USPS?
December 27, 2022 -

I had a fairly valuable priority mail flate rate bubble envelope shipped to me. The package was initially scanned in at a distribution center in NY. There were no updates for a week and I submitted a help request form.

USPS actually called me (which surprised me) and stated there has not been a physical scan for a while. She said I should file a "missing mail claim" and they she flagged the shipment. She continued that sometimes just flagging the package will have it moving again. I submitted the missing mail form last week, but there have not been any updates on it.

I have a small hobby business and ship USPS A LOT. I've had packages take a long time to be delivered, but I've never ran into a package having a single scan then never having an additional scan for multiple weeks. At this point, I'm wondering if I should keep patient or submit an insurance claim? There is insurance on the package, but the contents are sentimental as well as valuable and I'd rather have the package.

Has anyone submitted a Missing Mail Search with USPS and have it work? Additionally, if anyone has any input on filing an insurance claim, I'd be interested in that as well. Thanks!

Missing Mail Search..What Now - The eBay Community
May 15, 2025 - @ahetzler eBay labels come with $100 insurance except for media mail. If your buyer files a not received refund request then you do need to issue a refund. Go to USPS website and review the detail tracking info. On this tracking screen there is a place to file for email updates as there is movement on the tracking. Sign up for that so you get informed right away when something gets entered to the tracking. Go and file for a TRACE, I don't recommend filing for Missing Mail just yet.
