r/MITAdmissions on Reddit: Degree Plan
September 22, 2023 -
Hello, MIT fandom. I'm in high school and I have to do a project about making a degree plan for the college you want to get into. I chose MIT just for the hell of it but I am unsure how I am supposed to pick the classes as the websites I have seen are confusing for me. I want a Bachelor's in COMPSCI https://catalog.mit.edu/degree-charts/computer-science-engineering-course-6-3/ and https://www.eecs.mit.edu/academics/undergraduate-programs/curriculum/6-3-computer-science-and-engineering/ I have to state all my classes that I am taking each year and every semester. I also don't see any references to General Education classes that I would think I need for my first years in college. If someone could help me out, I would love you so much!

General education classes at MIT are called GIRs (General Institute Requirements). Searching for that should bring up all you need, but in short it's chemistry, bio, two calcs, two physics, and 8 hass classes (humanities, arts, and social sciences), with at least 3-4 being in the same subject, two being designated as communication intensive classes, and one in each of the 3 categories listed above. MIT also has a PE requirement. They're not scheduled like academic classes but are still required to graduate.

So you would do something like Year 1 / Fall 18.01, 8.01, 5.112, 6.100A, some HASS that interests you, maybe a couple of PE classes Year 2 / Spring 18.02, 8.02, 7.013, 6.100L, some HASS that interests you, two more PE classes etc. As mentioned by u/Aerokicks : https://catalog.mit.edu/mit/undergraduate-education/general-institute-requirements/ This includes: Two semesters (8.01, 8.02) of Physics Two semesters (18.01, 18.02) of Calculus One chemistry of your choice (5.111, 5.112, 3.091) One 7.01x Biology of your choice Institute Lab which will probably be met with 6.170 2 Restricted Electives in Science and technology which should be met with classes in your major Your 8 (or more) humanities has to satisfy: a concentration: https://registrar.mit.edu/registration-academics/academic-requirements/hass-requirement/hass-concentrations 2 communication intensive subjects 3 classes distribution https://registrar.mit.edu/registration-academics/academic-requirements/hass-requirement You'll probably fill in some random classes for your unrestricted electives.
