Nope. These certificates will never speak louder than personal projects. Especially at the beginning of your journey. The prevailing wisdom is that if you're looking to transition into machine learning then use these courses to build up a portfolio of work applying a variety of techniques. Then, take your new skills and apply them to projects of your own interest. Post all of these on github and create a page for yourself. Then, start applying to jobs that are in the wheelhouse of your newly developed ML skills. More on reddit.com

Since OP linked to a NY Times article that appears to require you to login, I have found the actual information for anyone else who cares: http://mitx.mit.edu/ The first course they are offering starts Fall 2012 and is in fact free, with a certificate given upon completion. The first course is on "Circuits and Electronics". I'm signing up, sounds pretty cool actually. EDIT - Here is a better link - https://6002x.mitx.mit.edu/ EDIT 2 - Maybe I won't be signing up: Requirements In order to succeed in this course, you must have taken an AP level physics course in electricity and magnetism. You must know basic calculus and linear algebra and have some background in differential equations. Since more advanced mathematics will not show up until the second half of the course, the first half of the course will include an optional remedial differential equations component for those who need it. When I was in undergrad I had an introductory physics professor who wasn't that great. I found out that some of the students in the class would skip lecture, find the YouTube video of the same topic from MIT's physics course, and watch it in their dorm room instead. Then they'd show up to the exams and make A's.

I've started this course on edx yesterday, it seems interesting, and I hope it doesn't just explain how to use things but also how things work and why they work. The course is free, but if you want to get certificated then you have to pay 200 usd.
Does anybody know this course (or similar MIT courses on edx) that could tell me whether it is worth it paying for the certification or not? Thanks!

What's your experience thus far with ML? Everyone is saying a course/certificate in ML is not useful because personal projects are more important. I agree with that assuming you are at a level to undertake your own projects. If you need a guide to get started, the course could be worthwhile. That being said, I am not familiar with this course specifically. I took a ML course in my graduate studies and it was very helpful for me.
