Great questions! I started out with the dry grain container for my Vitamix. It works okay for small batches, but leaves a coarse flour. For soft grains, like oats it works well, but for wheat you will have to sift out the bran and you can only blend a few cups at a time. It's also blending not really milling. I next considered the attachments for my KitchenAid. At the time, the Mockmill attachment was not available. The KitchenAid attachment didn't get great reviews. I ended up getting a KoMo stand alone mill and love it! I use it all the time and don't buy flour anymore. The Mockmills were not out yet, or I would have considered that too. A friend did buy the Mockmill attachment. It worked well enough, he could get a fine grind but it overheated his KitchenAid and was loud and slow. He ended up selling it and getting a used standalone KoMo on eBay and is happy with that. It works great and he got a deal from someone moving back to Germany. I would recommend getting a stand alone grain mill. Either the Mockmill or the KoMo. Wolfgang Mock is the Mo in KoMo. He split off and started his own company. But, take a look at the KoMos too. They have been around a while and have a 12 year warranty. If I were buying now, I'd be torn between a KoMo and the Mockmill Professional. I like the wood casing and being able to adjust the grind by turning the hopper versus using a lever. Good luck! Let us know what you decide! Answer from livtiger on reddit.com

October 3, 2024 - Most grain mills do a decent job milling coarser flour. However, all three Mockmill models mill a very fine flour on the finest setting – without the flour getting hot! This nifty attachment fits right onto your Kitchenaid, Kenmore, Electrolux, or AEG stand mixer.

r/HomeMilledFlour on Reddit: Grinding my own flour...Vitamix vs Kitchenaid vs Mockmill...which to get?
December 24, 2022 -

Hello! I am considering milling my own flour, and am feeling overwhelmed by what to do next. I mostly bake breads and muffins, brownies, and scones, although I would like to occasionally make cookies/pies/cakes, and maybe make my own pasta one day. I own a vitamix and a kitchenaid stand mixer (mini) already.

Could I just dip my toe in grinding wheat berries in my vitamix? Or do I need to use a mill to get flour that works?

If so, I know there's a vitamix dry grain container, the kitchen aid mill attachment, the mockmill attachment for a kitchenaid, a standalone mockmill. Will the cheaper options work well enough? Or do I need to go all out? Help stop my brain from melting down.

I have the mockmill kitchen aid attachment. It’s noisy to run but pumps out flour at an Ok rate. I only do abut 250g at a time and it takes less than a minute for a corse grind and a little longer for a finer grind. If you are dipping your toe in it’s a good place to start

Mockmill Review: Is it Really the Best Grain Mill on the Market?
May 10, 2020 - And if you bake most of all with your KitchenAid and don’t want another large appliance around, Mockmill does have an attachment! I have one to try but honestly haven’t gotten it out of the box yet. #lifeasmom · The Mockmill is very interesting, in that although it has numbers 1-10 on the lever that determines how finely the flour is ground, #1 isn’t always “perfect finely ground.” Why? The Mockmill actually has about 30 “positions” that the lever can rest in, from super fine to very coarse (cracked grain).

I bought myself a mockmill a few months ago, and I don't like it. Bought it for the bakery and find that the flour has a weird smell. I'm hyper sensitive to smells, and there aren't a whole lot of other people who have said they notice the same thing, but there are a few. The attachment for your mixer is probably the cheapest way to go. The kitchenaid version looks sturdier, the mockmill one is plastic and does feel flimsy (have used it before; it's slow to grind flour) but might work fine for you.

I have a KoMo Fidibus Classic which is similar to the countertop Mockmills. I love it. I've had it for 5 years and use it weekly. I don't buy flour anymore and just mill my own. I also have the Vitamix dry grain container that I got earlier. It does a decent job on soft grains but you will have to sift out the bran for wheat or harder grains. It chops versus grinding the grain. A friend of mine got the Mockmill KitchenAid attachment. It worked well in terms of grinding the flour finely, but was really loud, slow and overheated his KA. He ended up selling it and buying a used KoMo on eBay from someone who was moving back to Germany. I've used the stand alone MockMills in a baking class. It milled the flour well, but I prefer the method of adjusting the fineness by rotating the hopper versus using a lever. I've never had an issue with the flour having a weird smell. In fact, it's quite fragrant. I now find baked goods using white flour to be flavorless and flat tasting. Oh, I just realized that I said similar things in the r/HomeMilledFlour/ sub. I'll leave this here too in case anyone else find this. Good luck. I hope you find a great mill.
