Modified racing - Wikipedia
November 8, 2025 - The engine must be a 2300cc Ford Pinto (also known as a Lima) inline 4-cylinder, and the drivers can be no younger than 12, nor older than 18. Some tracks will allow children aged 10 or 11 to race if the track's insurance will allow. The KidModz are also allowed to run tubular chassis, whereas the IMCA/WISSOTA/UMP Modifieds have to have sections of frames from stock production automobiles, with other sections being steel tubing. These cars are offered for sale completely assembled and ready-to-race for under $20,000.
Could I get some clarification on the differences between classes of dirt track oval cars and what are the big differences between them?
I'm probably not gonna be the most accurate or specific, but typically a factory stock is gonna be a very entry level stock car, with restrictions on suspension parts, racing tires, bodywork, and engine components. An IMCA stock car is going to be similar at a glance, but with many of those restrictions lifted or loosened. It is a similar case with IMCA sport mods and modifieds. I don't know all the ins and outs of the differences, but I believe modifieds run alcohol fuel, where sport mods run high octane gasoline. An IMCA Sport compact is an entry level 4 cylinder front wheel drive car, like a doge neon or chevy cavalier. From what I can tell they have to be kept mostly stock, though I'd imagine there are some modifications allowed for safety and durability. I'm not familiar with eco mods, or jr Ltd mods but maybe those are what we call mod 4's and mini mods around here. Mod 4 being a smaller 4 cylinder modified and a mini mod being a small mod powered by a 600cc or 1000cc motorcycle engine. You are correct with sprint cars, big difference in classes is wing/non wing(also called traditional in some areas) and generally in each category 305, 360, and 410 are going to be the classes, referring to engine size. 305 will generally be the entry level class while 410s are what the world of outlaws and high limit sprint car series run. There are also series like the UMSS that are meant to be a low cost sprint car series, that run affordable carbureted LS engines, sbc 350s, and crate motors. They don't necessarily fall into any of those previous engine categories but would be on par with a 305. There are also smaller sprint cars called micro sprints, which, like mini mods, run 600cc or 1000cc motorcycle engines. More on reddit.com

What are the differences in the DirtCar Modifieds Classes? Is it just engines?
The 358 mod and Big block are a northeastern style modified with a full tube chassis, which more closly resembles a sprint car chassis, where as the ump and sportsman have a stock clip in the front and a 4 link in the rear most closly relating to a late model. More on reddit.com

Other commenter hit a lot of the differences, but I can add a few. The biggest difference from Mods to Sport Mods would be motor and suspension. Sport mods run a spec 2 barrel carb, and 3 link rear suspension with no coilovers. Springs have to sit on top of the rear end. Mods can run full 4 link with all the bells and whistles, and more open motor rules. Where I'm at, eco mods are a class that utilizes older outdated mod chassis to cut cost. Similar suspension rules to the sport mods. Our version has fully open motor rules, which I don't necessarily like, but it is what it is. Here Limited Mods and Jr Limited Mods(Also called Southern Sport Mods) are modified style cars built on a GM metric chassis like a street stock/factory stock. They use the same 2 barrel carb as other sport mod classes. I'm not super familiar with the Jr Ltd rules, but I believe they are much more limited on shock choice and run a spec tire. Could be wrong on that though, since my local tracks don't really have that class, just regular limited mods.

November 14, 2025 - Despite Pro Modified cars being slower than the Top Fuel or Funny Car classes, it has become one of the most popular divisions of the sport because of being full-bodied cars resembling Pro Stock cars with a hood scoop or superchargers being permitted. The Professional Drag Racers Association and the 2025 version of the International Hot Rod Association's Pro Modified classes are based on which type of power adder is used (turbochargers or superchargers in Boost in PDRA or Pro Modified in IHRA, while nitrous oxide is in Nitrous, while both are allowed in IHRA Outlaw Pro Modified).

They run these at Merrittville Speedway in Southern Ontario, but I don't know of any other tracks even remotely in my area that run them as more than a once-a-year special addition to the card. They used to be dwarf cars (similar to Legends), but they transitioned to the mod lite style over the course of a few years. Worst decision I've seen a track make, as they went from having 30+ in the pits week in and week out to having 10-12 fiveish years ago. It looks like the numbers are coming back up (~16-20), but I miss the days when they let 30 of them run the feature.
