Combining mid century modern and Victorian?
Extremely hard to do. If you have a great space, like an apartment in Paris with tall ceilings it will be easier than a regular house. I have some midcentury pieces with Chinese Art Deco rugs and my couch is a jewel tone so I think it can be done, but I wouldn’t say my style is overall midcentury. I love your idea of wallpaper or curtains, like a William morris design??? More on reddit.com
What’s your favourite design style? Mines modern Victorian
This is eclecticism/mash-up in my eyes, I never heard of "modern Victorian". Maybe it's a thing in the US, but I'd consider it a marketing name moreso than an actual style. Nice floor and chairs, the dining area works well with that sill/bench, but the mirror and the ceiling is a big clash and doesn't work at all imho. More on reddit.com

Victorian-themed living room and associated furniture
Well… that could involve a lot of over-decoration with elaborate design features. If you look at pictures of actual Victorian drawing rooms… it’s a lot. There is a LOT happening there for people who are accustomed to more modern taste. For me, it’s too cluttered and claustrophobic. Look at images of “modern Victorian design” and you’ll see a scaled-back version. And realistically, that explosion of stuff was fairly limited to people who could afford to buy it. Single men wouldn’t have had doilies everywhere, and of course not all women were into their homes dripping with red velvet. It’s worth trying to suss out what you specifically like about the aesthetics. Are you into the lacy “romantic” concept? Liking dark, heavy wood? Dreaming of bed curtains? Gothic grandeur? For the most part, furniture is furniture except houses didn’t have closets. You would have had lots of folding/stacking of clothes or using a wardrobe. Not for nothing— my parents hid their TVs for years. One was in a large Chinese cabinet and another in a closet recess. Nothing wrong with disguising the giant black square. More on reddit.com

Can it be done or am I dreaming? Would it only work with more jewel toned MCM pieces? I’d love to get some brighter more fun stuff in but I have my heart set on Victorian wallpaper or curtains in the living room. I can’t seem to find much inspiration online. I’d love to see some real spaces in either style (or both!) regardless. Thanks :)

This is 100% my grandparents! Grandpa was old school Madmen, all teak, all the time and Grandma was a fancy gal who loved damask and ornate scrollwork…oh, and a fancy gold framed mirror! I inherited a number of their pieces and my house has far fewer rooms to keep it separate. Look into Hollywood Regency style it’s great inspo for how to blend MCM and Victorian

How to Integrate a Modern Victorian Living Room into Your Existing House?
March 20, 2025 - Opulent, Enigmatic, Nostalgic and Eclectic! While there are a lot more adjectives that can do justice to describe the charm and elegance of the Victorian style, adding a few more is never an exaggeration. This pretty much sums up the Victorian style. Imagine being surrounded by a space with intricate & eclectic designs, a flickering fire grate, high ceilings, antique & ornamented elements, regal armchairs, framed cheval mirrors, and what not.

15 Modern Victorian Living Room Ideas For Instant Design Appeal
September 11, 2025 - When we moved into our Victorian home the fireplace hole had a plastic cover on it and finding a near as Victorian replica was the first thing we wanted to tackle when restoring some of the original details. We sourced a cast iron fireplace (with mantel) on Facebook Marketplace for £50 and we were able to fit it ourselves. It has become the first thing you see when you enter the room, and a defining focal point that looks amazing. The colour scheme is incredibly important in a modern Victorian living room.

Modern Victorian Parlor
June 20, 2017 - We just bought a Victorian house with a tricky parlor... how would you furnish it? The issues are: three non-walls (one opens to the hallway, the other pocket doors to the dining room, the third wall has a fire place) and a turret cut out. I'd like to go for a fresh, more modern take and not ...
