Yea I can tell in your picture the cartridge is not pushed all the way in. Grease it up and shove it in. The flared pieces on the cartridge should be flush with the cut outs in the brass. Then the pin will literally fall into place. More on reddit.com

Is the entire old cartridge out? Sometimes there will be a small piece stuck towards the back that won’t allow you to push it all the way in. Also did you try putting the removal tool on it to push it back? Most importantly did you grease the new cartridge and shower body? More on reddit.com

July 18, 2021 - I had gotten one from the local ACE hardware store so I could support local businesses, but it turns out their aftermarket part was just not taking the clip although visually it looked like exactly the same size. I replaced the cartridge with an original Moen 1222 from Amazon and the clip fit on perfectly first time, no fuss, 10 minute job.

Hey I'm installing a moen cartridge for the first time and having trouble with getting the retainer clip back in
I lightly toothbrushed the faucet with a mix of vinegar and water and let the water run thru to make sure the cartridge would go in all the way
But it seems like I don't have space to fit in the clip
It's supposed to go thru the slit part of the valve, right?
This is the same clip that was in with the old cartridge (also moen 1222), I unfortunately didn't take pics while removing parts
Should I cut the tile above? I feel like that's a bit extreme, but I think a plumber we had before knocked out a whole block in another shower, maybe because it was like this

Just did one of these two weeks ago. Make sure the stem is inserted just far enough. Once the stem is at the proper depth, that nasty little clip goes in fairly easy. Just be patient
