r/askaplumber on Reddit: Moen Banbury Sink Faucet Sticky/Squeaky - How To Remove Retaining Ring?
February 5, 2025 -

I have a Moen Banbury pull out faucet, model 87017SRS (the regular model number is Moen model 87017), that's hard to turn and squeals when you try to move the spout left/right. It happens because of corrosion/hard water buildup on the inside of the spout body, which puts pressure and a rough surface on the upper and lower o-rings, making it hard to turn and squeal. The fix is to remove the spout body (exposing the o-rings), clean up the o-rings and inside of the body where the o-rings ride against it, and lubricate everything with a silicone faucet lubricant.

This requires separating the spout body from the cartridge/innards. The spout body is held in place to the innards of the faucet by a retaining ring. Picture of retaining ring location: https://i.imgur.com/xdcBsCc.jpeg

Trying to pull the spout body up, separating it from the innards, pushes the retaining ring against the inside of the spout and keeps them together. It does, in fact, retain.

Close up showing the retaining ring, recessed deeply into the spout body: https://i.imgur.com/9ilyAyj.png. Some teeth of the ring are visible on the left.

Every single sink of this design, Moen or not, that I've seen, puts the retaining ring right at the top of the spout, if not sticking out above it. Trivial to remove with a pair of needle nose pliers or even a small flat head screwdriver. For some godforsaken reason, on this model, and ONLY this model, the retaining ring is recessed at least 1/2" below the top of the spout, and the gap between the spout body and the cartridge body is maybe 1/16". I can barely fit a tiny eyeglass screwdriver in the gap, let alone actually removing it with a pair of needle nose pliers or anything else.

This design is stupid enough that I'm about to just throw the whole thing away and buy a faucet that won't waste hours of my time because of a stupid, shit design.

How the hell are you supposed to remove the retaining ring on a Moen Banbury kitchen faucet?
