Get triexta or smart strand carpet. Better wear than nylon or poly, the strand is smaller which makes for a softer feel. Get the nap/density you like, if it’s good carpet it’ll hold up. Go for a 10# pad, and make sure installers use power stretchers, not just kick it in. If you buy from a decent dealer you should get a good warranty on everything. More on reddit.com

Mohawk is the number one flooring company in the country, so they have bad styles and good styles. Do you know which carpet you put upstairs? Did you have it professionally cleaned? Especially if it’s a hallway, it would get soiled fast and need a hot water extraction to lift the soil off so it lasts longer. It’s more important to look at the fiber of the carpet. Full disclosure: I work in the carpet industry If you've ever lived in an apartment or bought a house that already had carpet, it is almost 100% cheap carpet. Cheap carpet is made very quickly and in large quantities so it is as cheap as possible. It stains easily, isn't very soft, and is often a lower pile. Good carpet is almost entirely a different product with different yarn and different coatings. If you're in the market for flooring don't go to Home Depot or Lowes. You need to go in to a dedicated flooring store where you can see and touch the different floorings. Also the people who will be working there can answer just about any question you have. Good carpet won't stain, it will last YEARS, and the flooring manufacturer will replace it for you if you have issues with it. More on reddit.com
