Monetizing Spotify
All host sites will publish to most of the podcasting platforms, but not all host sites will hook you up with advertisers. I’m not sure what your current host offers, but Spotify will pay you. Spotify allows you to make modest money if you publish through Spotify and allow them to insert automated advertisements. Then - If you have at least 1,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Spotify qualifies you to record an ad read specifically for Spotify for Podcasters. This plays $14 rpm for all Spotify steams and $11 rpm for streams on all other platforms. Spotify also allows you to activate subscriptions (though I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a large and loyal base of listeners). It’s very modest money I make doing this and I would make more if I took the time and found sponsors on my own. Still, I am usually able to bring in $100+ every month with 7-12k monthly listens. It’s better than nothing! More on reddit.com
Did Spotify really just make it 10x harder to monetize?
If you haven't already, just put your podcast everywhere... that's the way a podcast was always intended to be. Never fully rely on someone else's platform for your revenue. I suggest looking into Podcast Index ( https://podcastindex.org ) and the Value4Value concept ( https://value4value.info ), and then pick a great non-platform-specific podcast hosting service that supports generating revenue in multiple ways. (I currently like Blubrry) Host-read ads are the best of ads, but if you are niche enough, go for sponsors. And, if you can develop community, go for V4V. As a voracious podcast listener, ad-insertion is the worst. I like to support the podcasts I love, or hear about great products/services the hosts use and love. Everything else is going to perform much worse. More on reddit.com

Has anyone started a podcast with a concrete plan for monetization from the beginning?
👋
I did this. I planned to launch my own podcast and learn the ins and out of the process.
I then developed my skills and combining my decades of marketing experience with my newly found abilities to create and edit podcasts I began working with others who were looking to launch their own podcasts.
Now I do mostly one on one consulting for people looking to get a well organized framework for constant and effective podcast creation.
More on reddit.comDoes Spotify pay podcasters money?
The platform doesn’t pay podcasters directly. However, it does offer tools to integrate ads, and Spotify pays subscription proceeds once you create pay-to-view content.

Currently I'm hosted with a service that pushes to Spotify and others, but will I be able to earn money that way or would it be better to host directly on Spotify as well as the other site pushing out elsewhere?

I think you need to separate out your host from someone who pays you money for advertising. They may be one and the same thing but you can’t have two hosts. All hosts push to all the main listening apps. But some push out extra.

April 27, 2022 - Companies that would like to promote their products or services in front of your listener in exchange for monetary compensation are known as sponsors. Sponsors, in simple terms, pay you on a monthly or per-episode basis to promote their products or services to your target audience. Sponsorship for your podcast is relatively simple to find. Similar podcasts can be found online, and their sponsors can be contacted. To find suitable sponsors for your podcast, you can also attend industry events or join business networks.
