Western Union does the same thing. I used to think it was WU or MG, but it's actually rules the country instated to prevent "money laundering." Of course, this never affects the real criminals who do money laundering and only creates more hurdles for regular, poor people. One thing I noticed today is that MoneyGram is not allowing bank to bank transfers. The only options I am given now are debit, credit, or cash at the store. I contacted the customer service and they told me they've "temporarily disabled bank payments." The only ways to pay are debit card, credit card, or cash at a location. I then went to Western Union and their website is not allowing me to enter my relative's bank account number. The prompt asks for an 11-digit number, but the bank account is 12 digits hahah. It is so mismanaged it's a wonder how they're able to run things there. I e-mailed their "webcare" people and chatted with someone who said they "escalated" this matter. They e-mailed me back with a 24-hour response time while the chat customer service didn't give me any timeline to receive a response. tl;dr Wiring money to our family in other countries is a total shit show. I have never seen MoneyGram cheaper than Wise. I just checked on various amounts on the app and its showing same as yours. I think I had an issue with my American bank(credit union in Cali) not being on the list so I never used it. One thing im not certain if you are aware of is if you have over a combined 10 grand in one or more foreign bank accounts you must report it to the US government. Its the FBAR filing. Penalties are steep if you fail to report. Carrying cash doesn't have this requirement but banked cash does.
