I should mention that we're just looking for an upper end, single sided, natural gas direct vent that looks like a traditional fireplace. It would get used sporadically during the colder months in NJ.

Largest firebox/flame presentation will be Town & Country (at the expense of a deep framing rough opening and overall inefficiency). Best overall option (heat, flame presentation, options for interior panels, logs etc.) will be Mendota. They have a wide range of products (including 3 Landscape profile models that are unlike many in the industry) and are very well built. Besides the brand, you should consider the dealers technical service. You will need service at one point or another and having a dealer with a competent service department is invaluable.
