r/techbootcamp on Reddit: The Best Programming Languages to Learn in 2026
April 22, 2026 -

Starting a series of posts for anyone trying to break into software engineering or just curious about the field , kicking it off with languages, If you're starting from zero, the language debate is mostly noise. Here's what actually matters by path:

Want a job fast? Python or JavaScript. Both are beginner friendly, both have massive job markets, and both will still be relevant in 10 years.

Want to work in AI/ML? Python, no debate. TensorFlow, PyTorch, all the major ML libraries run on it.

Want to build websites? JavaScript first, then TypeScript once you're comfortable. Most serious companies have already moved to TypeScript so you'll need it eventually anyway.

Want to work at a big boring company with great job security? Learn Java. Banks and insurance companies built everything in it 20 years ago and it's not going anywhere.

Want to get paid the most? Get good at Python and point it at AI work. That's where the money is right now.

SQL is in more job postings than any other language and most people sleep on it, Learn it alongside whatever else you pick.

I'm going to create more posts, I know this was pretty brief but I didn't want to make it a textbook. drop what you'd want covered next.
