I have no idea why I like these. Looking for something like the Machinist or Hereditary. Something where a character becomes increasingly disturbed. Or a movie that lingers with you because it is just so disturbing psychologically
Please give me some suggestions of the movies that have disturbed you the most, the darkest, most disturbing, uncomfortable, twisted and fucked up psychological horror movies.
Thank you in advance.
I need some good recommendations for horror, getting bored of the same things,
I find these movies pretty effect at creeping me out
“Coherence” “Endless” “Vivarium” “Mother!” And hell house LLC/ gonjiam:haunted asylum are not necessarily psychological horror but still got me good
I’ve gotten back into horror lately and I’m looking for some good recommendations. I like horror films that make you think, full of suspense, keep you tense and on the edge of your seat.
Slasher/gore horror kinda bores me. Nothing that’s just people getting murdered.
For context here are some that I love and am looking for a similar vibe to:
The Black Phone (2021) Hold Your Breath (2024) Run (2020) Clock (2023)
me and my friend are looking for the weird kind of psychological thrillers/horror. we don’t want anything like a serbian film or salo or anything super gory. we are okay with some gore but looking for a more kind of mind-fuck horror movie with a plot twist or a good story.
things that we really enjoyed: midsommar, incident in a ghostland, martyrs
Please no movies about haunted houses, ghosts/zombies/supernatural etc or typical serial killer movie bullshit im looking for something realistic like it could happen in real life but also really fucked up at the same time. Edit: thanks guys for all of the suggestions i wont be able to watch them all since i didnt expect so many replies but ill pick out a few to watch on my free time
I'm aware this is a somewhat frequently asked question, but i couldn't really find anything that would live up to my expectations.
For example the American Psycho and The Machinist, Black Swan and Perfect Blue were quite some interesting titles but they didn't really leave me with a deep shock or some kind of emotional disturbance in the end.
I've also seen things like the Human Centipede and not going to lie, it was pretty disturbing but somewhy it didn't give me such an emotional terror.
I'm looking for something that is way more serious and perhaps even more philosophical or psychological than those. I'd like also like to avoid jumpscares if possible, since i just find those rather annoying.
I don't mind surrealism or fantasy elements in a movie as long as they are portrayed as something coming out of someone's imagination or mind but not trying to be sold as "reality". In other words, i would like something that sticks to reality as much as possible, and gives me a more raw or artistic feeling to the movie than Hollywood style.
Sorry if this isn't quite the best question, i am not sure myself how to describe what i'm seeking for exactly, but hope it somewhat makes sense!
Thank you for everyone's suggestion and time!
Edit: Grammatical errors and formating
Examples of what I like:
Invitation
The Visit
Watcher
Midsommar
Get Out
As Above so Below
I just like the thrill, the unknown, spookiness
During October I like to watch a Horror movie every night, ending with a full evening of Horror on Halloween, I like the Halloween session to actually terrify me but I've become very desensitised to Horror so most of the slasher/monster/gore/Supernatural movies just don't scare me anymore.
So I'm looking for recommendations for psychological horror movies that are either terrifying, unbelievably creepy or extremely uncomfortable.
I'm asking Reddit because every list of the "scariest movies" has completely failed me.
Think along the lines of Midsommar, Dogtooth, Creep and Get Out... but scarier.
Thank you!
Edit: Lots of replies so I may not be able to respond to all of them, but I appreciate them, and will let you know what I think of the movies you suggested after I watch them!
Doing a movie night tonight for Halloween and no one I know knows anything about horror
It's truly annoying how desensitized I've become when it comes to horror movies. Jump scares don't elicit the same effect, nor does violence. For example, I saw AntiChrist, and while it was gory and a bit creepy, it was nothing traumatic. The Descent didn't even give my horror dick a half-chub. I am looking for that one movie that you watched once, didn't sleep for a week because of, and still run up the stairs when the lights are out because you're afraid you're going to die. Prepare me your list of gems, so that I may feel frightened once more.
Except you can’t say any of the following movies:
Serbian film
Martyrs
Salo or the 120 days of sodom
August Underground trilogy
Cannibal Holocaust
I Spit on Your Grave
Any Lucifer Valentine films
Oldboy
Men Behind the Sun
Oculus
Eden Lake
The House that Jack Built
Human centipede 2
Any Ari Aster movie
Antichrist
Funny games
Inside
Tetsuo the Iron Man
Requiem for a Dream
Nekromantik
Audition
Henry portrait of a serial killer
Megan is Missing
Jacob’s Ladder
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Hostel
Guinea pig series
Suspiria

Don’t get me wrong, some of these films are pretty good. But I see the same titles repeated over and over again under every thread asking a question about disturbing films. I want to see some hidden gems, some less-talked-about movies, etc. Feel free to recommend anything that’s not in the list above.
I remember watching the i spit on your grave movies. My friend told me I had to watch it idk why I watched, curious I guess. I watched the first the second and the third movie in one sitting with this girl and idk her face would be so interested in the violent scenes idk. But anyways I felt like throwing up after I watch the first one I liked the revenge parts tho it was so satisfying. I can't really remember much of the movie because I was like 14 and I think I suppressed what I saw. Crazy how that movie turned into my life when I turned 15.
You all gave me amazing dark comedy movies for my first Reddit post almost a year ago, and I must request the council’s opinion once more. It truly feels that this is the best place to go for suggestions. I am a huge horror fan, but as many of you know, the genre is extremely over saturated with garbage. Jump scares are fine, as long as the film EARNS them. I don’t want a giant audio cue and “jump scare” for a rat scurrying across the ground or something. Supernatural elements are ABSOLUTELY on the table as long as it’s executed correctly. You guys were amazing with your comedy suggestions, so I know there has to be some genuine horror connoisseurs here. For reference, some of my favorite horror movies that mostly fit this criteria are:
-The Thing (OG) -Hereditary -Haunting of Hill House (show) -Haunting of Bly Manor (show) -Midnight Mass -The Woman in Black (SOME cheap scares, but fantastic atmosphere and tone imo) -Silent Hill(with Sean Bean) -Babadook (I know some laugh at that film being called “scary”, but I truly felt a sense of dread while watching. Awesome psychological horror.
Are ‘Color out of Space” or Long Legs worth watching? I thank the council for its gracious suggestions and for its time.
I really liked the movie Midsommar from Ari Aster. Mostly because of the psychological horror / disturbing aspects of the movie. Any recommendations for similar movies?
Jacob's Ladder is a classic if you're into psychological stuff, and inspired a ton of stuff that came after it including Silent Hill. Note that the remake is bullshit though. The original is the beat.
Midsommar borrowed quite a lot from The Wicker Man (1973), check that out if you haven't seen it.
One of Christopher Lee's finest performances and a great soundtrack!
I would say without much thinking "Hereditary." It messes with your head in all sorts of ways. The family dynamics, the grief, and the slow build-up of tension are seriously unsettling. I am not saying anymore because I don't want to write a spoiler but you have to see that movie!
I really enjoyed Ari Aster's films like Midsommar and Hereditary. Also liked films like American Psycho, nightcrawler, gone girl, Black swan...all mainstream things...what are some other films I can watch next?
