I mean, motion-activated would probably be more likely to scare a burglar away, or get them to move on to the next house, but probably only marginally. I love cameras that auto-track their target and also have motion-activated lights, so that the light comes on and then follows the person around like they've got a stage spotlight on them. Or like the Eye of Sauron is following them. I think that's a big deterrent because it would make them think someone is actively watching them. I use a Reolink Trackmix camera for that. Outdoor light on a time and on a motion sensor
I run home assistant, zwave, and use NodeRed to run a dusk to dawn timer to run my outside lights and a timer that shuts one light off at 10pm. I also have another flow that watches a pir sensor and turns some lights on for me for 5 mins but only if it’s after the sun has set. So what you were asking for is 100% doable with an outdoor rated motion sensor. You can go as low budget as hardwiring both lights with a Shelly and a switchbox right there. Or fully wire out the switch to wherever you would want it for conventional use and installing a single pole switch with a Shelly or aby automation controlled switch/dimmer. More on reddit.com
Can I use motion sensor lights indoors?
Absolutely. While a motion sensor light is popular for outdoor security, it's also perfect for indoor convenience and energy savings. They are an excellent solution for hands-free lighting in areas like closets, pantries, laundry rooms, basements, and garages.

Planning on making some changes after a couple of nearby homes were burglarized. Are always on or motion activated more of a deterrent? We also have cameras and Ring alarm.

Motion Always! I prefer the lights that allow you to do a 25% or 50% light always on after dark then when it detects motion it kicks on full.

r/DIY on Reddit: Outdoor light both controlled by switch and optional motion sensor
October 10, 2025 -
I don’t know if what I’m looking for is even possible, but we want to get an outdoor light installed in the back garden. We would like to be able to both switch the light on so that it’s on constantly, and also have a motion sensor option where it turns on for movement and then back off again. Is this possible? Or would it have to be two seperate lights? 😮
Thanks in advance

Many of the motion controlled lights have a feature where if you flick the wall switch on and off in a certain pattern the light stays on irrespective of motion detection until daylight returns. If you wanted to get fancier, many of the more basic motion control fixtures have separate wiring for the motion detector and light sockets so that you could run three wires - 2 switched hot and a neutral - to the fixture. Wire one hot through the motion detector and one hot directly to the lamp sockets, then use a SPDT center off switch at the wall.
