Hi Ron,

Please note that directly moving the data from a subscription of one tenant to another is not feasible. It’s not feasible to move an Office 365 tenant from GoDaddy to Microsoft either. You may manually remove the domain from the Office 365 tenant in GoDaddy, cancel the Office 365 subscription, then purchase an Office 365 subscription in Microsoft, and add the domain into this Office 365 subscription.

Here are two scenarios:

  1. If you are using the Outlook client now, exporting and importing the pst files may be a good choice. Here are two articles for your reference:

Export or backup email, contacts, and calendar to an Outlook .pst file

Import email, contacts, and calendar from an Outlook .pst file

  1. If your GoDaddy emails are on an IMAP server, you can refer to the following article to migrate them:

Migrate Email from an IMAP Server to Exchange Online Mailboxes

Here are the steps to change your subscription from GoDaddy to Microsoft:

  1. Back up your emails from GoDaddy.
  2. Remove your custom domain from the Essentials plan.
  3. Cancel your Office 365 plan in GoDaddy.

Note: As you purchase the plan from GoDaddy which is a Syndicate Partner of Microsoft, the interface or steps might be different from the ones bought from Microsoft directly, you may need to consult GoDaddy support for the detailed steps regarding the actions above.

  1. Purchase an Office 365 plan from Microsoft directly.
  2. Add and verify your domain in Office 365.
  3. Import your emails to Microsoft with pst files.

Note:

a. To keep the website, you need to manage your DNS records by yourself.

b. If you use the Migrate function, you need to have both GoDaddy and the Microsoft subscription. Please cancel your plan in GoDaddy after finishing the migration.

Regards,

Barry

r/Office365 on Reddit: Migrating from Godaddy M365 to Microsoft 365
July 20, 2023 -

I have a customer who has about 50 email accounts, or about 1.2Tb of data on the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 platform. There are several limitations we are running into and the customer would like to migrate to a true Microsoft 365 Platform.

I have done a M365 Tenant to Tenant migration before and it was not a pleasant experience. Microsoft provided 0 support, and actually told me that it was impossible to do, so I basically had to perform complete backups of all email accounts, then re-upload them.

I do have some concerns about the migration because I basically have to release the tenant name back to public, then re-acquire it after 24 hours, according to what I have seen. The customer has someone (believed to be their previous IT person who may or may not still be in contact with employees at the company) actively trying to sabotage them on a very frequent basis. I am concerned this person may try to acquire the tenant's name during the 24 hours and get it before I am able to.

Beyond that, I am very interested to know what tools you have successfully, or unsuccessfully, used for this process. While I have a fairly fast 500Mbps internet connection, it still seems to take several days to download the entire data set. I would like something I can do a trial run with, then something I can run differential backups with right up until the last minute.

I would also like to set up something to cache all the emails while the system is down. I am thinking something along the lines of a Linux mail server, or maybe a 30-day trial of a mail security program that has that functionality.

Hi Rod,

Thank you for posting, I am here to help you. To move your Godaddy mail to Microsoft 365 please follow this steps.

You need to have a subscription, if you only need one address in the domain, a Microsoft 365 personal subscription is fine. consumer custom domains don't have an admin portal. They use the personal email page in Settings then select Premium.

If you have a Microsoft 365 mailbox from GoDaddy, you need to cancel that - then when it is removed from the Microsoft servers, you can add the domain in Outlook.com's Settings (gear icon) > View all Outlook settings > Premium > personalized email and add the alias. (The alias cannot exist on the account in account.microsoft.com - you'll create it on this page.)

Microsoft article on adding a custom domain: https://support.microsoft.com/office/get-a-personalized-email-address-in-microsoft-365-75416a58-b225-4c02-8c07-8979403b427b

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let us know if you have any further questions If the answer is helpful, please click "Accept Answer".

To move your email from GoDaddy to your existing Microsoft 365 Outlook account, you can follow these steps:

  1. Contact a GoDaddy Guide: Before starting the migration, reach out to a GoDaddy guide who can assist you in customizing your migration process. They will help you determine which mailboxes are migrating and set up any necessary configurations.
  2. Domain Verification: You need to verify that you own your domain. This can be done by entering a TXT record on your domain DNS. The GoDaddy guide will provide you with instructions.
  3. Download Outlook Migration Assistant: If you haven't done so already, download the Outlook Migration Assistant to facilitate a smoother migration process. This tool is only available for Windows PC users.
  4. Change DNS Settings: On the migration day, change your DNS settings to point to Microsoft 365. You will receive the necessary DNS settings via email 8 hours before the migration.
  5. Provide a 48-Hour Window Post-Migration: After the migration is complete, wait for 48 hours before fully using your new Microsoft 365 account. This period allows the GoDaddy team to sync any final emails from your previous email server.

By following these steps, you can successfully migrate your email from GoDaddy to your Microsoft 365 account.

Dear Med Roy

Good morning to you and thank you for your post in the Microsoft community.

Thank you for reaching out! I’d be happy to guide you through the process of migrating your 84 Microsoft emails from GoDaddy directly to Microsoft 365 using the Microsoft Admin Center. Below is a step-by-step breakdown to ensure a smooth transition:

Step 1: Prepare for Migration

Verify Domain Ownership in Microsoft 365

  • Sign in to Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
  • Go to Setup > Domains and add your GoDaddy domain.
  • Follow the steps to verify ownership by adding a TXT record in GoDaddy’s DNS settings.

Check Existing Mailboxes

  • Confirm all 84 email accounts exist in GoDaddy and note their credentials.
  • Make a list of usernames and passwords, as they may be needed later for migration.

Step 2: Set Up Microsoft 365 for email

Create Users in Microsoft 365

  • In Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Users > Active users and create accounts for all 84 users.
  • Assign the appropriate licenses (Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Exchange Online, etc.).

Update DNS Records (MX, CNAME, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC)

  • In Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Setup > Domains, and update the DNS records as provided by Microsoft.
  • Remove old MX records pointing to GoDaddy and replace them with Microsoft’s MX record.
  • Allow some time for DNS propagation (may take a few hours).

Step 3: Migrate Emails from GoDaddy to Microsoft 365

Use the Migration Wizard in Microsoft 365

  • In Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Setup > Migration and start an IMAP migration.
  • Select IMAP Migration and enter GoDaddy’s IMAP server details
  • Upload the list of email addresses with their credentials (if required).
  • Start the migration process.

Monitor Migration Progress

  • Go to Exchange Admin Center > Recipients > Migration to track the status.
  • Migration time varies based on email size and number of users.

Step 4: Finalize the Migration

Verify Email Flow

  • Test sending and receiving emails in Microsoft 365.
  • Ensure users can log in and access their mail.

Decommission Old Email Accounts in GoDaddy

  • Once migration is complete and emails are working in Microsoft 365, delete old accounts in GoDaddy.
  • Remove any unused DNS records related to GoDaddy email.

Communicate with Users

  • Inform users about the new login process.
  • Provide Microsoft 365 Outlook Web Access (https://outlook.office.com).

For your ref you can check: Troubleshooting IMAP Migrations to Office 365 | Microsoft Community Hub

Important Notes:

  • The migration may take 24-72 hours for DNS changes to propagate globally
  • Consider doing this migration during low-usage hours
  • You might want to migrate a few test accounts first before moving all 84

If there is anything we can do or if you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're here to support you in any way we can.

If this information was helpful, we also invite you to submit your feedback and vote for the answer so that others can find it more easily.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer, one question though, when the migration is complete is the data carried over or are the old mails and inboxes gone?

thank you Diane. Yes I do have a 365 Personal subsription on ******@outlook.com

I added a my email as a test and it returns an error of "You can't add a work or school email address as an alias to a personal Microsoft account. Please try another."

I added a made up name to see if this was just my personalised domain it wouldn't accept. It took the made up name, and didn't take my personal one. So yes I see what to do, and thank you for making that clear.

However, this is a live service and I cannot lose email. So preumably it will take time to delete the GoDaddy instance of 365, and in the meantime, what do I do to minimise loss of email? this is a live email service which has been used for decades.

thank you

Hi, I'm Diane and I'm happy to help you today.

As long as you keep the subscription, you can use the address after November. But it needs to be set up before then.

Thanks! This is pretty complicated and tedious, Questions:

  1. What is the url I need? I was on your site and couldn't find an email plan.
  2. Do you have online support who can walk me through it?
  3. I have 365 already on my machine. He purchased it and set it up with his juno email. And he needs a business email also, and he doesn't use Outlook. Does he have to do that now?

Hello annmarie,

Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description you want to move 4 domains away from GoDaddy to Microsoft O365 (Exchange Online) and keep all your email am i right?

  • What do I need to do? Create your new Microsoft 365 account with whatever plan(subscription) you need
  • How do I make the switch out of GoDaddy? Example for one Domain:
  • Create your new Microsoft 365 account with whatever plan you need.
    1. Note: while creating your new account on the MS website, you might want to use the same username and company name as your existing Office 365 account in Step 2 of the account setup process. What I mean by that is if your current O365 email address is "******@modern.com" you'd enter "Eben" as the username, and "widgets" as the company name, meaning your new ID will be ******@modern.onmicrosoft.com. This might not be possible if the name is already taken, but I thought I'd make it known.
  • Add your newly created email account to Outlook or whatever email client you use.
  • Drag email from your current O365 folders to your new account. Example, I "select all" mail in Inbox and then dragged all my Inbox email to my new account's Inbox folder, then did it again for Sent folder to Sent folder, etc. This will take some time depending on the number of emails you have. Make sure you wait for this process to complete for all mail folders.
    1. Note: if you have custom folders you will need to add them first to your new account before dragging email from corresponding folders in your existing account.
  • Login to Goddady or whoever is your existing O365 tenant and cancel/delete your O365 mail account.
  • Login to your new "******@modern.onmicrosoft.com" account:
    1. Click on Admin icon
    2. Click on Settings (gear icon) > Domains and add your domain. It might take a little while before your former tenant releases it and it becomes available to you. Use the "recommended" domain connection setting if possible.
  • Set your newly connected domain as the default.
  • Click on Users > Active Users and add your new email account as a new user but make sure to select your domain (not onmicrosoft.com) as the domain. Make sure to make it the default or "primary" if there's a setting for that.
  • Logout and login with your new email account (not the onmicrosoft.com account).
  • Now back in Outlook on your local computer you will notice that your former email (from old tenant) is no longer connecting, so feel free to remove it. Don't worry about losing your email because you copied it to the new "xxx.onmicrosoft.com" account you added to Outlook, remember?
  • While still in Outlook you can edit your (new) account settings to reflect your new domain, etc.

Don't worry if you get stuck on any of the points relating to the O365 admin portal panel because a quick call MS tech support will get you sorted in no time. Or you can create ticket via your new O365 tenant to reach them. when you get in your Admin portal https://portal.office.com down right side click on the green icon Help&support

  • Do I have to buy something else? yes new Microsoft 365 accounts with whatever plan you need

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,
