r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: MSI B650I EDGE WIFI - update BIOS with Flash Button not working
May 13, 2024 -

I built a new PC (with cable management and all that), but when I turned it on, the CPU and DRAM lights were on. After googling, I started trying to update the BIOS, but no matter what I did, it didn't help. Red LED either solid or stop flashing after few seconds

What I have tried:
-different version (7D73v19 and 7D73v1A)
-different names (original and MSI.ROM)
-5 different USB flash drives
-different formatting (FAT32/NTFS and MBR/GPT)
-with and without CPU and RAM
-different RAM slots (one by one)
-clear CMOS button

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: PC not booting after successful (?) bios flashback on MSI B650i
January 10, 2024 -

Recently upgraded to AM5 with the the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and picked up the B650i to pair it with. I knew before I bought the motherboard that it will need a bios update to support the CPU, and being pretty well versed in computers I didn't think this would be an issue. After assembling the computer, I go to install the newest non beta bios that I have ready on my USB. upon plugging it into the mobo and pressing the flashback button. It seems to work as expected, turns pc on, slow blinking followed by rapid blinking, And at the end it restarting. however when I plug in my displayport cables, there is no signal. I know this isn't a GPU issue as I was using the same GPU earlier today in my old pc. I've tried everything I can think of. different USBs. cleaning the drive and manually making MBR partitions, trying beta updates, ensuring my file is correct etc. I feel like there is something missing that is really obvious, the last thing I want to do is accept defeat and send the mobo back for another one, as SFF can be a pain to. Hope anyone here has any idea.

r/ASRock on Reddit: Question about B650I-Lightning Bios Flashback
November 9, 2024 -

I recently received the B650I-Lightning for my first SFFPC. Will be using a 9800x3d for my build, which ASRock's website says needs at least bios version 3.01 to boot. The mb I received only has version 1.28 installed, however. I don't have another compatible CPU so I will have to use the flashback feature. I posted a picture of the flashback instructions ASRock posted for this board.

My question is: does it matter if I fully build my PC before I do the flashback, or should I only plug in exactly what the instructions tell me to and no more (i.e. no GPU or case fan connections) to do the flashback?

Sorry if this is a silly question; I'm relatively new to PC building and have never ran a bios flashback. Would rather be safe than sorry and not bust anything. Thanks

I recently tried to update my B650I Lightning Wifi to BIOS version 3.10 but upon reboot after the update, the PC wouldn't boot at all (Power button is on and fans are spinning etc. But nothing in the screen).

I attempted to clear CMOS but it didn't work so I tried doing USB flashback. I plugged in my USB (3.0) to the flashback port with the BIOS file renamed as CREATIVE.ROM, extracted to the root of the drive, but it won't read my USB drive. My flashdrive is in the FAT32 format and I double-checked with BOOTICE.

The Bootflash LED flashes then turns solid green indicating that the BIOS flashback isn't working.

Has anybody had any success with getting the B650I Lightning Wifi flashback to work? I've attempted unplugging everything but the CPU but it doesn't seem to help.

So I bought two of these motherboards because 1 was bought overseas and I cant send it back to the shop.

Both boards behave exactly the same to what I am trying to do which is to flash the bios on the naked board, just using PSU and a USB stick.

Either the USB stick is not recognized and the red lef doesnt flash OR the led flashes but does that indefinitely for 30+ minutes.

I have tried EVERYTHING with the USB sticks, cleaned, MBR converted, smaller partitions etc.

Oh and first time i built the rig the bios update seemed to have worked (mobo restarted) but the PC wouldnt post and the cpu and ram led would be turned on.

MSI support even tells me to RMA the board back but how likely can it be I have bought 2 faulty boards?

Find elsewhere

I bought a MSI mag b650 Edge wifi board and a 7800x3d.

At first I didn't know the bios did not support the cpu so I connected everything except the GPU and booted the pc. it wouldn't post and the red and yellow LEDS were shining. (should it flash those LEDS because of the bios?)

Then after some research I understood I needed to upgrade the bios. I formatted a flash drive downloaded the latest bios for my board from MSI. Renamed it to MSI.ROM (and msi.rom after a while). Connected to the correct usb port and pressed the bios flash button. it would start flashing but the pc would not turn on.

After a few failed attempts I removed the CPU and RAM and tried again, this time the PC turned on and the flashing was quicker but it would not end. it kept going for over an hour. Tried a couple more times and still the same. also tried a different flash drive but with that it wouldn't turn on again.

What should I do now? I need some help please, thanks.

r/ASRock on Reddit: B650i lightning... no POST, flashback aborts after 70sec
December 2, 2024 -

Well, today I tried powering up my new system for the first time. I have the following components:

  • B650i Lightning WiFi

  • AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

  • Silicon Power PC5 6000 ram (30-38-38-96), 2x32gb

  • Samsung 990 Pro 4TB m.2 SSD

  • temporary PSU: Coolermaster RS-400-PSAR-J3 (ATX12v, v2.3 w/o PFC... "400w" (lists 276w for 12V1 + 12V2). My real PSU (Asus Loki 850w) is arriving in 2 days. I also have a 4070TiS, but I'm not installing that until I have the new PSU because I know the current one almost certainly isn't good enough.

The board was open-box from Micro Center. I assume they make at least a minimal effort to test returned motherboards prior to putting them back on the shelf to make sure they at least POST.

When I power it up, the power LED blinks at 2hz and the CPU fan begins spinning for around 67 seconds... then it shuts off.

I tried clearing the BIOS to defaults (power off, unplug, jumper across BIOS clear for a few seconds). It didn't help.

I then tried using Flashback:

  • 16gb USB2.0 flash drive

  • downloaded 3.10 BIOS from https://pg.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B650I%20Lightning%20WiFi/index.us.asp#BIOS , extracted to flash drive, renamed to PSPBIOS.IMG

  • downloaded Raphael/Granite Ridge BIOSUBU from same page, extracted to flash drive as BIOSUBU.BIN

  • turned off power, unplugged, plugged in, turned on power, inserted flash drive into HDMI port directly above the HDMI port (the one with a box drawn around it indicating that it's for flashback)

  • pressed and held Flashback button for ~4 seconds

  • The green LED on the rear began to flash, while the power LED on the case illuminated solidly and the CPU fan began to spin.

  • After approximately 70 seconds, the green LED on the rear stopped flashing, the power LED went off, and the CPU fan stopped spinning.

  • Waited for it to reboot. After around 10 minutes, I gave up.

  • Attempted to restart. Same behavior as before.

At no point have I gotten any video output whatsoever (though I know that's not itself necessarily indicative of a problem, since modern displays with HDMI are so aggressive about powering down at the slightest hint of inactivity).

Any ideas what the problem might be, or what to try next? The most consistent symptom seems to be the system powering down approximately 66-70 seconds after either pressing the power button or triggering Flashback.

Obviously, the present power supply is sub-optimal... but I think that if the problem were being caused by the power supply, the board's behavior would be a lot more random... and not be consistently shutting down almost exactly 66-68 seconds after powering it on (by toggling the power button, or triggering Flashback).

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: Help with BIOS Flashback on MSI Pro B650M-P
September 16, 2024 -

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me with an issue I’m having with my new PC build.

Here are the specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Pure Rock 2

Motherboard: MSI Pro B650M P

RAM: Crucial Pro DDR5 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL36

The issue:

When I power on the PC, the red CPU LED and the yellow DRAM lights up on the motherboard. I’ve already replaced both the CPU and the motherboard – no luck.

I then tried a BIOS Flashback, thinking the BIOS might be too old for the CPU. However, the process gets stuck. It’s been over 20 minutes and nothing is happening.

What I’ve tried so far:

Tested the RAM sticks one by one and tried different slots Checked the CPU socket and pins – everything looks fine

Tested the motherboard outside the case

Performed a CMOS reset

Here’s the issue I’m facing when trying the BIOS flash:

I removed all components except the PSU and the motherboard for the BIOS flash. I’ve downloaded the latest BIOS version for my motherboard from the MSI website and copied it to an 8GB USB stick formatted in FAT32 with MBR partitioning. The file is named "MSI.ROM" as required. After inserting the USB stick into the designated port and pressing the BIOS Flashback button, the LED began blinking. However, it’s been over 20 minutes and the LED is still blinking.

Could I be doing something wrong with the BIOS Flashback, or is there something else I’m missing? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: Do I need to update bios before putting in the CPU? (B650-P/7800x3D)

Board: MSI Pro b650 P WiFi CPU: Ryzen 7 7800x3d

Hey all, My build should arrive within the next three days and I'm currently researching the compatibility warning I got from pc part picker.
According to reviews the board will arrive with an old bios version, which does not support the CPU. I need to update it to the newest version. Now, my plan was to just build the whole PC, and before installing windows I just flash the bios through the bios menu like shown in their video on the msi page. But I've also read that I should update the bios first and then put in the CPU to not damage stuff. I saw no video or tutorial on that specific board on how to do this tho. Do I put my CPU at risk if I only update after the full build (but before installing win11)? Does the board even support the other option of updating without visual (I think it's called flashback?).

Sorry if that gets asked a lot, but I've tried researching it and can't find specific info on this. I've never done a bios update with only the PSU and board, so I would really prefer to do it through the bios menu if possible.

I just bought MSI B650 Tomahawk motherboard and will be using AMD Ryzen 9700X CPU. I learned that i need to update the motherboard using the bios flashback feature with the help of a USB drive. I just wanted to know what should I rename the file that I downloaded from the MSI website.Should I rename it to MSI.ROM ?And should I turn on the power supply before inserting the USB Drive in the rear I/O panel of the motherboard or should I insert the USB flash drive first and then turn on the power supply. Also which BIOS version should I download. On PcPartPicker it says 7D75v1H or should I download the latest version listed on MSI website.
