What motherboard do you have? If it has "BIOS Flashback" or a backup BIOS (two BIOS chips), recovery will be easier. If it doesn't have the Flashback feature or a backup BIOS, recovery will not be easy. You'd either need a new motherboard, or manually flash the BIOS with a BIOS programmer tool (requires additional tools and some soldering experience). Answer from SingularityRS on reddit.com

BIOS update unsuccessful | MSI Global English Forum
September 27, 2023 - If you don't get 5-8 minutes of flashing with the Flash BIOS Button, either something about the procedure was wrong, or the board doesn't like your USB stick. The board can be quite picky about which USB stick it accepts for flashing, so sometimes you have to try several until it works. I've seen a report of a "Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 32GB" working where some other sticks have failed, and another report of a "SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive, 32 GB" having worked.

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: [Help] Can’t get BIOS to update
January 14, 2025 -

Hi, I have a MPG B550 GAMING PLUS (MS-7C56) which I cannot get to take a bios update. I suspect this is because it is a prebuilt computer, and they have their own version of bios. I am trying to update bios because I have bought a new CPU, an AMD Ryzen 7 5700x3D.

Let me preface this by saying I have never messed around in bios before. There is a reason I have a prebuilt. Haha.

The current version of BIOS I am on is listed as E7C56AKB.1K5 I have tried updating the bios normally - downloading latest not in beta version for my specific motherboard, extracting and placing the file in the root directory of a 32gb USB newly formatted to FAT32. I have tried using the flash bios usb port on the motherboard, and multiple other usb ports. I tried using the bios flash button on the motherboard. I have also tried using rufus to format usb to FAT32, non-bootable. Renaming the update file to MSI.ROM did not work either.

When trying to use forum UEFI Shell flash tool - which seems to be my only option that I have found - it gives me the message «source files missing»

I have sent an email to the company that made my pc (komplett.no) but I am afraid they will take multiple days to answer and I would like this fixed sooner than later.

Is there any way to get the latest update for my board, or force the board to use a normal msi bios? Why won’t uefi flash tool work? Is it a usb issue, mobo issue, or windows issue? And I want to be sure this will work with the new cpu (ryzen7 5700x3D) please.

Thanks for any help. Pictures of bios and what m-flash shows when the bios file is in root directory of usb.

The problem is likely something very simple - like you did not extract the archive, or the files are in a subfolder instead of the root. Do not just use the "send to" usb - actually look at it - pay attention to where the files are and what they are called. Make sure they are in the place that MSI expects or it won't work. Also stop trying to use the autoflash feature - that's only really there for when your CPU is not supported and you can't boot. Instead just go into bios and enter the EZ Flash menu. You should be able to select the usb stick and navigate into subfolders and select the bios then.

Do NOT update Bios if MSI motherboard :: Hardware and Operating Systems
August 10, 2024 - MSI just released a new BIOS for motherboards over this 14900K Intel fiasco. Do NOT install it, you will not be able to change any BIOS setting and will be stuck with DDR at 4800mhz speeds and unable to change XMP profile or any setting in BIOS. IF you DO install this mess, soon as your Bios menu posts in that first millisecond hit F7 to be able to click their Bios updater to revert back to your old Bios.

r/MSILaptops on Reddit: BIOS update failure
April 9, 2026 -

Hi everyone, I recently bought a used GF66 Katana and tried to update the BIOS. I downloaded the file from the MSI website, loaded it onto a USB drive and launched the update from the BIOS. Everything seemed to go smoothly, but after the BIOS flash completed the laptop turned off and the power button started blinking rapidly. I waited more than 20 minutes but nothing changed, so I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, and pressed the reset button with a pin for 30 seconds — but nothing worked. Right now, if I unplug the charger the button stops blinking, then when I plug it back in it blinks slowly at first and then goes back to blinking fast like before. I really don't know what to think — what could have happened? And most importantly, how do I get out of this?
