MSI "Game boost" is garbage. It's just a manual preset overclock by MSI that uses stupidly high voltages. It's not safe at all and it is completely different from "precision boost" that comes stock. Answer from canned_pho on reddit.com

Msi game boost or manual OC for Ryzen 5 3600 - CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory - Linus Tech Tips
August 3, 2020 - I have heard that Manual OC was better than Game boost but wanted to ask you guys if that was true. I have a Ryzen 5 3600 on a B450 Tomahawk max and was thinking msi game boost or manual OC. People say that game boost puts to much voltage, so should I enable it or just manual??

August 18, 2019 -

I've finally upgraded my i7 920 to Ryzen 3600.

Absolutely happy with it.

Anyway. I've enabled Game boost with my MSI Tomahawk B450 and now have an all core 4.2gz running at 71 degrees c max during Cinebench R20. Score 3652. Ive reused my Hyper 212.

Yet I see everyone saying I shouldnt use game boost. Any reason why?

I get a lower score without it on.

Good or bad?

r/AMDHelp on Reddit: MSI Game Boost (Ryzen 5 3600)
July 19, 2020 -

Hi, I have enabled MSI Gaming Boost on my motherboard (MSI X470 Gaming Pro MAX) with a Ryzen 5 3600 (and a Deepcool Gammaxx GTE v2 cooler) at first I noticed in task manager 4.2Ghz and in COD: Warzone I saw high temperatures (peaks at 80°C. Because of the high temperatures I wanted to disable game boost to try overclocking to 4.2Ghz manually. First question is: in the CPU ratio i should write 42 or 4200? And what about the voltages? Second question is: I enabled again game boost waiting for some answers in this thread and restarted my computer with a result of 4.07Ghz and different voltages. Why isn't the voltages and clock the same? And how can I put the CPU at 4.2Ghz without staying at 80°C (at the "new" game boost clock it stays at 79°C in Cinebench R20)?

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: 3600+tomahawk - Game boost in bios?
August 7, 2019 -

I have a 3600 with b450 tomahawk (bios 1A) and Ryzen master with pbo and auto overclock gives me 4125 max single core and 4000 max multi on boost which seems pretty bad.

I removed Ryzen master and enabled game boost in bios together with pbo with all voltages on auto, it boots with 4200 clocks but crashes immediately when benching. From game boost description I understand it's basically an auto overclock from bios. Anyone using game boost successfully? Thanks.

Edit: also noticed enabling or disabling pbo in bios does nothing to clocks...is it broken?

r/Amd on Reddit: MSI game boost Ryzen 5 3600 cpu core voltage max at 1.1
August 3, 2020 -

I always see on threads that msi game boost makes your cpu draw power higher than safe voltage (1.4) but when I turning it on, ryzen master only reads 1.1 cpu core voltage and also because of game boost I can reach 4.2ghz. But when I tried to stress test using prime95 my system restarts after a minute, last temp before restarting was 75 celcius.

What do you think cause of system restart? And if my core voltage at gameboost is 1.1, do you guys think it is safe to use it?

Note: system doesn't restart when playing games.

Specs:

  • B450m mortar non-max

  • Ryzen 5 3600 16gb 3000mhz

  • 1060 6gb zotac amp!

  • 650 bronze seasonic modular

  • Gammaxx gt rgb

  • 960 evo m.2 nvme

Edit: HWinfo64 SVI2 tfn reads 1.1 to 1.38. both voltage also varies depends on cpu load, sometime it reads .4 if idle.

Should I keep an MSI game boost and an A-XMP activated? - Quora
Answer: Given that you have put “A-XMP” here, I am going to assume that you are on the AMD platform. With all Ryzen CPUs, you should keep “A-XMP” enabled if your system is stable with it enabled (or even optimise the timings yourself but you would have to research the best timings for ...

r/Amd - MSI game boost = 4.2Mhz all core (3600)
September 23, 2019 -

I have been playing around with the 3600 all day today on my MSI x470 gaming pro carbon and none of the overclock settings were better than stock ( excluding manual OC), most of them performed worst. Then just on a whim I decided to try game boost. I have no idea what it is or what it does. Anyhow the computer cycled on and off a bunch of times and never posted so I did a hard reset. After that got a screen the said "Do not Bios OC with game boost" in yellow letters and the computer posted at 4.2 all core.. couple funny things though HWinfo64 and CPUz are now showing different voltages and they were not before. CPUz says my Vcore is locked at 1.352. HWinfo64 shows Vcore at 1.1 also if im running a single core load core VID is around 1.4 and if im running a multicore load my core VID 1.1. Can someone confirm any of this with MSI game boost...

Explaining AMD Ryzen Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), AutoOC, & Benchmarks | GamersNexus
July 16, 2019 - Someone at MSI was paying attention to PBO enough to create these profiles, so we can assume that they’ve tailored the motherboard PPT/TDC/EDC limits to fit their board. In the interest of not making this piece overly long, we’ll summarize the tests we ran and discuss all the results together. We tested the R5 3600 and the R9 3900X in the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master and the MSI X570 Godlike motherboards, and we ran them with PBO disabled, PBO enabled (auto), and PBO maxed with a +200MHz AutoOC offset (includes maxing thermal throttle limit and PBO scalar menu options).

Yes, those temps are fine IF Cinebench is the most demanding thing you are likely to run. If not, then you need to run whatever app, utiliy or game that is, and see what your temps are there. While AMD says the maximum safe temp is 95°C, I'd recommend keeping things below 85°C if you want to ensure a long life for your CPU and to keep high core boosts up as long as possible.

Get rid of Ryzen Master, it's for overclocking, which really isn't going to help and has its own set of issues. ClockTuner2 Dram Calculator Thaiphoon Burner Start with following CT2 instructions for a basic bios profile, some things will be enabled, some disabled, different to factory default. Save that to bios Profile 2. First, Dram Calculator. That'll use TB to grab all the essentials from your ram. I did not change the Primary timings in mine but did use the secondary and Tertiary timings, made a very noticeable difference in performance. No ram is perfect so while some settings will take all the numbers, some won't, so adjust your personal ram accordingly, don't expect an exact copy over. Once you get good and stable numbers, Save it to the bios profile 2. Thatll set you a base bios that can be reused as a blank canvas. Then finish CT2 instructions, play around with voltage, clock speed limits etc until you get best performance vs temps. It's going to take a while as you'll be overclocking by undervolting. Set bios to load Profile #2. I use an untouched virgin factory optimized default bios as Profile #1. By using the profiles, you save all your adjustments, if ever needing to reset bios/cmos at anytime, you do not lose your dram settings, just order bios to load/use #2 after reset. CT2 is software OC, so can be enabled/disabled at will. Mine has % set for stock idle use, low core boosts and high core boost. Net effect is that single core performance was raised, multiple core performance was raised, higher Cinebench scores, higher fps and a 20+°C drop in temps across the whole thing. Took all day, but the end result was worth it imho.

What does Msi Game Boost do? - CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory - Linus Tech Tips
March 14, 2019 - I have a Msi b450 tomahawk paired with r5 2600, and in the bios it has a toggle for game boost. When I turn on the toggle it shows Cpu speed at 3.85 ghz (using the stock cooler) in the bios and also in the task manager. Is it applying an all core overclock?
