My pc has suddenly stopped booting, when i turn it on, the fans etc come on but nothing happens, the q code on the motherboard shows 71. I took it to a repair shop and they told me I need a new motherboard as the bios chip has broken and its not replaceable on my board. My question is, would a faulty bios chip cause this and show 71 on the motherboard? I just want to be certain before i shell out for a new board, any help would be greatly appreciated! :) Specs are- Asus maximus vii hero, Asus GTX 980, I7 4790k , corsair vengeance ddr3 3200mhz 16gb ,

My motherboard is z590aorus master I9 11900k 2x8 gb ram trident z And a gt 1030 (waiting for rtx 4000) So i just built the pc its the first time i start it, all the fans spinning and rgb lighting, but no display output and the motherboard number thing shows a bunch of numbers and then restarts at number 80, i tried it a bunch of times and got tired so i left it, after an hour or two i tried again and it shows me the 71 error code now, i have cleared cmos using the button on the mb. The post codes you mention seem pretty cryptic 71 is "PCH SMM initialization", and 80 is reserved for OEM use. No idea what they could indicate. Which LEDs in the corner of the mobo stay on when trying to boot?

I went into my bios and loaded optimized defaults and then I set the cpu core voltage to 1.2V and my cpu ratio ( I think that is what it was called ) to 46, so 4600 mhz or 4.6 ghz. I need help with my pc.

It won't post into bios at all now. It display q code 71 but goes through a sequence of numbers on it before it stops on 71. The warning lights go from vga light to boot os light and stay on boot os ligt once the q code reaches 71.

Thing is sometimes it will boot in bios but not always. Turning off the pc means that I will have to try restsarting it again until it boots back into bios which may take a while. If I set my oc to sleep, it will always boot into bios when i turn it on. I set my pc to sleep, but I think a windows 10 update happened overnight which made it reatart and go to q code 71.

I have switched ram and the slots they're in, tried a different gpu, reseated cpu, and unplugged/replugged storage drives. I have also switched the cmos battery out.

Cpu- fx 8320 stock Mobo- Am3+ 990fx Asus Crosshair Formula V- Z Ram- 16gb ddr3 teamlite Gpu- MSI Gaming x Rx580 8gb Psu- Corsair 650w 80+ Bronze Semi Modular

Have you tried a minimum to boot? Also, check your MB's troubleshooting manual/guide for specific codes. If you can't find anything, I'd contact the manufacturer. In the meantime, I'd reseat literally everything (PCIe cards, RAM, power), check the internals for potential issues like cracks, burst caps or anything even remotely unusual.
