r/Frugal on Reddit: Best way to clean silk filled duvet?
September 8, 2015 -
I have a 100% silk filled duvet that desperately needs a cleaning after a recent move. I don't want to take it to a dry cleaner because it will cost almost as much as the duvet to clean, and the chemicals can be harsh. Can I just put it in a washing machine on warm?

When in doubt, your best bet is to hand wash. In this case, I recommend scrubbing your bathtub and rinsing well, then filling with lukewarm water and a bit of Woolite detergent (it's a special detergent for delicate items, sold in smaller bottles in most stores). Soak, and rub just the areas that are stained. Rinse well in a clean tub of water, and squeeze to remove water (never twist). Lay flat or hang to dry, preferably outdoors where it'll take less time. As another posted mentioned, you can also try a clothes drier, set to 'no heat'. If you have areas that are heavily soiled, try pretreating before you wash: fill a spray bottle from the dollar store half-full with peroxide, and add about a tablespoon of baking soda and a small drop of clear liquid soap. Swirl to mix, then spray the stained areas well. Let soak for 10 minutes, blot with a towel, and spray again, heavily. Let that sit for an hour, then wash in the tub as described above. That should get stains out of anything!

I'm no expert, but I've always been told that putting silk in the washing machine will ruin it.

How to Wash Silk Duvet: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
January 22, 2024 - So which is best for your silk duvet? Here are a few key factors to consider: Fiber type – Mulberry silk is very durable, while wild silk tends to be more delicate. Mulberry can withstand occasional machine washing. Weave – Looser weaves like charmeuse and tighter weaves like satin are both delicate. It’s safer to hand wash both, but they can be machine-washed in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle if necessary. Manufacturer’s instructions – Care labels indicate which methods are safe for that specific duvet.
