Not sure if you realize you can apply more than two colors to a gradient. You can turn the Monster logo into a compound shape and apply a single gradient with three instances of purple and three of blue. Answer from Last-Ad-2970 on reddit.com

Each stop can still be a different color, or you can use the same color for the entire line with multiple stops included.

r/AdobeIllustrator on Reddit: How do you add gradient to entire object (different colored fills) to create a shadow? Illustrator CS5. Thank you.
October 28, 2021 -

I'm working on an illustration composed of the linework, the colors (done with the brush) and shading done with purple at Multiple transparency at 30%. I saw a video where the guy creates a new layer with same transparency value of Multiple at 30%, clicks the gradient tool, draws a short line starting below the illustration (painted with several colors) and a beautiful shadow is cast on the illustration. He uses photoshop, I'm on Illustrator CS5. What am I missing here? I've been searching everywhere for hours and can't find anything that comes close to recreating this effect.

This is the video. He applies the effect at the 20:05 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhChRyWtMgM&t=1231s. I can't apply the Overlay effect he does after this either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Starting to digitally color my scanned inks and these 2 steps would really elevate my game.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance.

He has a marquee around the illustration, so the gradient affects only the contents. The gradient looks like black (or dark purple?) to transparent, multiply, 30% opacity overall. Illustrator doesn't have marquee selection, so to recreate this you would need to create an object that encompasses your drawing, such as this: https://i.imgur.com/rgjOENs.png This one is a copy of my objects, then Pathfinder > Unite. Then apply the gradient to that object. You could also simulate this with Appearances, but it's a bit more tricky to understand: https://i.imgur.com/XST9jSI.png You can add a fill to your objects at the group level. This will appear to fill them all individually, but it's just on top of their existing fills, nothing has changed. Then use Effects > Pathfinder > Add on the new fill. This simulates actually joining all the objects; they appear as if they were united, but they're still separate. Then apply your transparency settings to the fill.

The effect looks like he recreated the shape, pasted in place and merged it to get the whole art encompassed. I would then use a gradient in a transparency mask to get the subtle ess that shows. Also allows you to recolor it easily. So select the new shape, copy it, open transparency, create a mask and paste the shape in. Then with that shape still in the mask and selected apply a black to white gradient, adjust as disired. Exit the mask. When you select the shape now the fill will show just a color and not the gradient so it's easy to change the color while maintaining a gradient.

How to Create Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator
October 20, 2022 - Keep going until you have your lines created, then change the colors of each point by double-clicking and doing the same as we did for the point gradient. You can make the same customizations for Opacity and Spread as we did before. Lastly, let’s move onto our mesh gradient. This is an easy way to create an abstract gradient background, but also useful if you want to add depth to your illustrations by blending colors together in your artwork.

r/AdobeIllustrator on Reddit: Changing multiple gradient colours at once without changing gradient direction
August 27, 2024 -

Hi there,

Currently working on a large .ai file for a camo pattern. There are multiple layers of different shapes and colours. Two of these layers have gradients across the shapes.

The gradient colours are the same across all shapes, however the direction is different between each. There is something like a hundred shapes in each layer…can I select all and change the colours without affecting the directions of the gradients somehow?

Gradient Mesh in Illustrator

  • draw a rectangle
  • select the Mesh Tool
  • click one corner of the rectangle
  • apply corner color
  • Select the Direct Selection Tool
  • Click another corner anchor and apply color
  • repeat for remaining corners

There's no simple, one-click solution for a gradient of that nature.

Shape Layers in Photoshop

For Photoshop, the processes is much more cumbersome and involved and nowhere near as precise.

One method could be to use a separate shape/vector layer for each corner, then a solid filled shape as a base.

You basically set a gradient for each shape:

Then once you have the 4 shapes with Gradients change their blending modes to Darken. You don't absolutely need that bottom white rectangle I used. But things won't look quite right without a solid color (preferably white) background behind the gradient shape layers.

Another method for Photoshop could be to simply grab the Gradient Tool, set a color to transparent gradient and then drag from a corner. Repeat for each of the 4 colors. The problem with this method is that each time you drag, the length of the gradient will be different. So, you won't end up with 4 equal corner gradients. The Vector Layer/Shape Layer method ensures the gradients are all the same length.

In the end, I'd simply generate this in Illustrator and then copy/paste to Photoshop as a Smart Object.

To get the effect you're looking for in Photoshop, I'd suggest the Sblended add-on. Full disclosure: I wrote it.

Here's a screenshot of the interface used to create the gradient.

  • add two lines by tapping anywhere in the main area
  • add two color stops to each line by tapping anywhere on the line
  • position the color stops at the corners by dragging
  • pick the colors you'd like by double-tapping a color stop

Once you've built the effect, you can apply it in the same way as the built-in Gradient Tool - by dragging it across whatever area you want.

You can grab the free demo version to try it out here: https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/17501

November 14, 2022 - I'm kinda new at doing art on illustrator BUT I think if you copy the shape and use the shape builder tool to combine all the bits into on huge outline then it might work. Once you've done that you can make the original shape that hasn't been shape builder- ed just stroke and no fill so that you can see the one under it. After that just put the gradient you want on the one underneath(the one that you shape builder-ed).

April 15, 2022 - I do this with ALL of my blacks, as I tend to work in Illustrator and InDesign primarily. Gives me that nice rich black when my stuff is printed. ... It depends I suppose. In print, as you probably know, the same gradient "banding" will print to media just as you see it on screen. It's because sometimes there are so few intermediate steps between two colors.
