MVA Woes
I may be able to help you. You can check my comment history, etc. I have worked in vehicle registration here in MD for about 15 years now. While MD does require you to turn in your plates before cancelling your MD insurance policy, I have been able to help people in this situation before. As long as the state you moved to has limits of liability that are greater than or equal to Maryland's requirements, and the insurance company can send something to MVA proving such, you can get the fine waived. If you need help with this just PM me. I saved a couple 5K when they moved back here from IL and had massive fines like you. More on reddit.com

Can someone help me understand the following letter? I lived in MD last year but now I live in another state. My cousin who still lives there sent me that letter addressed to me. I owe $953 apparently. What happens if I don’t pay? It says they will garnish “federal vendor payments” wtf are those?
I’m a lawyer. CCU is real but this letter is odd. Lots of good advice in this thread. Verify that debt before paying. Verify you are calling the real CCU too. Look up number online and call. Don’t trust the number in the letter. Good luck. More on reddit.com

Hello,

I recently got my plates suspended for a lapse in insurance I didn't know about, and had to start a payment plan to be able to renew them. Paid the initial fee and said I need to make at least $50 payments the 2nd of every month. All good.

Well, a month goes by and it's the 2nd, I log into ccuportal and, while my account is there, there doesn't seem to be any way to make a payment. The 'make a payment' button is greyed out (on mobile, on PC the button isn't there at all), and the 'current balance' on my account is $0.00.

I tried calling, and after 45 minutes on hold the representative immediately hung up. The automated phone system says my account does not exist. Sent an email to ask.ccu, who knows when i'll get a response.

Anyone know whats going on and how I can make a payment? Would rather not get my plates suspended again, or worse.

EDIT: Something odd I noticed, after I made the initial payment to start the payment plan, there's an additional listing under 'payments received' for the remainder of my balance as 'FileAdj'... made 4 months before I started the payment plan. This doesn't seem right.

As the title states I’m trying to get into contact with Ccu to set up a payment arrangement. My registration has been suspended. I was told from ez pass if I create a payment plan the suspension will be lifted in 5-10 days which is wild 😂 I asked if there was a easier/faster way the lady said you could get them to fax information over but I won’t hold my breath. I’ve tried to contact them I called at 8:25 this morning and there’s a 2hr 15min wait already? How is that possible? Anyone have any advice on how to get someone on the phone?

I just moved back to MD after a 6 year hiatus. My previous stint only last about 2 years. I wasn't aware of Maryland's law requiring you to surrender your license plates when you move away.

Well, today when I go to register my vehicle at the MVA I'm told they won't let me because I have a "Lapse in insurance coverage" fine of $5,000. Well, after calling my insurance company and getting record of my insurance coverage from 6 years ago, MVA tells me that it doesn't matter, because that policy was in the new state that you moved to after MD and not a Maryland policy.

So now I'm faced with either setting up a payment plan or paying the fine in full before I can register my cars in MD. This seems completely ridiculous to me.

  1. Don't call it a "lapse in insurance" if it's the license plates you care about. I had insurance.

  2. There are tons of states that don't require you to surrender your license plates when moving.

  3. There should be a cap to these fines. There's no victim here, so why does the fine need to accrue forever.

  4. Also, I was told that the fine had a 17% charge added to it when it went from MVA to CCU, which is MVA's collections unit. Why the fuck does it need to have another 17% charge added on? CCU is part of MVA and it's not like they're doing anything to hunt down debtors. It's been 6 years and I wasn't even aware that this debt existed.

I've lived in 8 states as an adult and never seen one that loves to extort their citizen's the way that Maryland does. My wife got a fine from driving on the Intercounty Connector. The tolls like $2, but the fine is like $70. What is with this state? It baffles me that politicians think this shit is ethical, but if you've got the right connections, you've probably got other means for getting out of fines.
