On your Android device, open the Google Photos app . At the bottom, tap Collections On this device. If available, open your device folders to find your missing item. When you turn “Backup” on, your chosen device folders are automatically backed up too, not only your camera.

I just noticed Google has deleted YEARS worth of photos from my backup
Google won't delete anything, people do that themselves because they think of Google Photos as some sort of shared harddisk which it isn't. More on reddit.com

You used the "Free up space" feature and it did exactly what it said it would do and you confirmed. Chill. Unfortunately the easiest way to get your photos back on your device (that was full, mind you, so you better figure out a way around that first), is to use Google Takeout on a desktop computer to download all of your Google Photos. You can choose just the YYYY-MM-DD folders and ignore all others (those contain dupes for the albums, which will be counter-productive in your case). Also change the default archive size from 2 GB to 50 GB to ease downloading. After downloading, extract the archives, plug your phone into your computer, and copy all the photos back to the DCIM folder on your phone. You can ignore the JSON files. Now also realize you have no backups if your photos are only in Google Photos, especially if you don't have a copy on your phone. Use Google Takeout occasionally (I do it every 2 months) and store those archives in at least 1-2 safe places. More on reddit.com

Looking for some help.
In the last two days, Google photos has restored every single photo on my GP to my gallery on my android phone. When I delete from my gallery, it's now deleting from my GP too automatically. I don't want to turn off sync, as I want any new photos synced onto GP, I just want to go back to how it was.
Any idea how to fix this? I can't find a solution online.

This is what I need! Didn’t realise using the clear space would automatically delete uploaded photos without me being able to choose!

Hi, I have no idea where to start. I went to look up photos of my grandma, and I noticed most are now missing with no clue on when or how they ever got deleted. Ive been using Google photos since 2012 and many of my photos from 2012 up to 2019 are just GONE. Why and how did this happen?? Has this happened to anyone else and is there any way to get them back?
Slight update: I still haven’t gotten many of my photos back BUT there are two things that helped a little: firstly searching for a month and year instead of scrolling through. The other may be to change your membership, I recently got the offer for a year free for the student member ship (the one that is 1TB, the pro version of Gemini, etc.) and I got some videos and photos back. It’s definitely not everything but it’s at least some. The support team has not been helpful but still trying to work toward a solution.
Biggest thing, there are a lot of us who have had this experience!

so sorry for you. that sucks. you write 'backup' but presumably you were relying on google for your only copies of these shots? jump on google's takeout service now and actually backup the rest to a hard drive. takeout for google photos will export all your albums by default (and will also automatically create albums for each year) you can click through and check/uncheck what you want/don't want though. good luck.. sorry i can't be any help with your actual problem though.

So, tonigth I got an alert saying that I had almost no space left on my Google account or something like that. Of course, since the synchronisation is activated I thought that I would simply delete every pics and videos from my "cloud" and keep everything on my phone. Long story short I didn't found how to do so but I saw a message saying that I could free a good chunk of storage by doing something (I really don't remember sorry).
So I do this and all my freaking photos and videos are missing on my phone and are on my Google photo account. I still have very little storage left and so I wanted to redownload everything and even older pictures/videos since my phone have more than enough storage.
I've looked everywhere and tried everything I could but it seems like I can only download 1 pic a time. I can't select everything or only by doing it month by month and if I select more than 1 picture the option to download disappear.
I'm very angry right now and so upset so I'm sorry if I'm not to understandable (I'm not English too so it doesn't help) but if anyone have an answer or a solution I'll be glad to hear it thank you in advance.

That sounds like a bummer. I'm guessing you used Google Photo app's "free up space" feature" to delete all local photos that have been already uploaded to Google Photos. I am not aware of an easy way to download all the photos back to your phone. The only way I can think of is to download all the photos onto your desktop PC (through something like Google Takeout) and then manually transfer them over to your phones from the PC, which will probably take a few hours.

Downloaded it because Apple iCloud got full and had less space plus I’m able to use this on any phone unlike Apple photo app I can download google photos on any device and have all my photos no matter if I break a phone or get a new one I’ll always have my pictures.
