Hi all,
I was hoping to engage Sophos support directly but after spending 5 minutes navigating the various sites there wasn't really any easy option and given I'm not a paying customer for my home setup so i wasn't expecting much anyway.

- Account logins don't work at all, i've not been able to login once- I've now got 3 Sophos accounts because the only way to get what i wanted without signing in was to create a new account- Password Reset has not worked for any of these accounts. I am able to receive the pin code via email, but once authenticating the codes the site gives an error no matter what password i use. Changing browser or using incognito mode does not help
I suspect this has been an ongoing issue as i recall some months ago running into the same issue, banging my head against the wall and giving up.
I use Sophos both at work and at home and after my recent experience I'm honestly quite disappointment and have started to look at alternatives in the market. The issues i've encountered seem quite serious and I'm bewildered that they haven't been reported/rectified in some time.

So my school's wifi password changed, so I asked the IT people for the new password, and instead of just giving it to me two IT dudes came over and took my computer for like an hour, and kept randomly asking me to put in my password for them, open my emails for them, etc... I think one of them mumbled something about security or anti virus? Then they finally give my computer back and yay, I have wifi again, but I also have something called Sophos Home installed? So I did some research because it all seemed very strange (they did this to a few of my friends who asked for the wifi pw, too) and apparently It is anti-virus software, but they can also monitor my search history and stuff now? Exactly what can they see? My google searches? The websites I visit? My actual computer screen? Someone please tell me! This whole situation just makes me feel uncomfortable because they knew It was my personal computer and they didn't explain anything to me, and I don't like the idea of everything I do being monitored. Can they see I'm typing this Reddit post out right now? Uh. so yeah. just some explanation as to how much control these IT people have over my computer, and exactly what activity they are monitoring would be really appreciated. (:

Hello. I work in IT including the education sector. What I would do Go see the IT staff that installed the software. Thank them for getting you back on the network. Then ask why they installed the software, how it works and did they find any issues with your device. You'll see below that I think the staff behaved badly, for people that work in education but being rude back won't help. Software Is it Sophos Home or Sophos Home Premium? If the school has one of the big packages then they get licences they can provide to staff and students. Neither of these can be monitored by the school. If you open up the virus checker and look for history, you should see they have run a scan. The time taken indicates this is what they were doing. Allowed and why Regardless it was rude of them to install anything without explaining to you what they did. IT staff are not always at human interactions but they should be, especially in education. Is the computer your own property outright or did you buy it from the school, pay installments, etc. If so they probably have the right to do so, by logging in you effectivly gave them permission but it was unfair of them - you couldn't really say no. Equally by using the network,you probably agreed to only use a device with appropriate virus protection on the network (they should have explained this). BYOD - Bring Your Own Device. This is when someone uses a device on your network. Because we have less control we add more restrictions or require greater security on devices. Often one of these requirements is an up-to-date virus checker. It is possible they have installed new security that has checked for this and this stopped your WiFi working. The IT usage policy, is basically to protect the school from your actions. So if you surf or do something inappropriate they can hold you to account. It is likely a legal requirement, in UK we have a legal responsibility to keep our students safe on site. The fact they asked you to sign one is quite nice, we just say by using our WiFi you agree to terms. Read the IT use policy they want you to sign. It will say they have the right to monitor your internet usage (this is because firewalls will be monitoring traffic and if you visit a concerning site they will want to review). It will also say they don't want you to bully other students, surf for dodgy things, etc. Monitoring staff and students We really try not to if possible. Onsite we have a legal requirement to do so. But off-site if you are searching for inappropriate material at home that is between you and your parents. Morally it becomes difficult, if we monitor your home use and you search for LGBT and that triggers a warning, any conversations with parents could endanger students wellbeing. Also it is creepy. There are exceptions where there are legal or police orders where we are required to monitor devices but we really explain everything in these situations.

Well, this can be disconcerting, and I understand why. Sophos is used for mitigating multiple threats like viruses, malware, ransomware and web threats. The IT dept has the ability to manage the websites you visit as well as put policies on your machine as to what applications you can use on your machine and also what is not allowed. The software is installed on corporate issued devices or educational facilities to ensure employees and students are not downloading and installing software which could put the company at risk or use applications which could hinder productivity. That having been said, being able to connect to your school's wi-fi does not make your machine part of their infrastructure, or make your machine their responsibility. If there are policies which you must follow in order to access their resources, it must be put into their Terms of Service. That way, if you violate these terms, they can take further action against you. They should NOT be installing this software on your computer if in fact, this is YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER. No, they cannot see specifically that you have written this post, but privacy is your right, and what you do outside your school online should not be monitored unless YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM SPECIFIC RIGHT TO DO SO. It seems to me that you have not given that, and unless this is a school issued device, it is within your right to tell them to remove the software. Good luck, my friend!
