I'm unsure if this will help anyone, but on my laptop, in Device Manager, Windows 11 had disabled both of my Display adapters: AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics and NVIDIA GeFore RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. I right-clicked on them and clicked Enable, and instantly my monitors connected again.
For me, I don't think an update caused this, but rather I was already connected to my monitors, and then they suddenly disconnected. I'm not sure the cause. Hope this helps someone.

This bug is impervious to logic.
Has been working fine for months. Suddenly stopped yesterday.
Driver says it doesn't need updating.
Have updated every system option in sight.
As a last resort, I uninstalled the secondary HDMI monitor.
Windows 11 now does not detect it.
(It detected it just fine when I first brought up the computer,
lo these many months, so I suspect a bug in the latest Win 11 update.)
HAH! Solved! After doing all of the above, I tried a HARD reboot, instead
of a SOFT one. (Shut the machine down, then push the start button, instead
of selecting "Restart" from the menu. All of the system-update restarts must
have been soft restarts )
The problem might have gone away sooner in the process, but at no
point was a hard restart required or recommended!
I had the same happened to me with a brand new Lenovo laptop. I had it connected to my 1 year old 49" LG smart TV through its HDMI port, and was working flawlessly...until the latest Windows update. After the update, no matter what I'd tried, I could not get my laptop to recognize that there's an external monitor connected to its HDMI port. It was sooooo frustrating! Through two days of searching the web and reading an inordinate number of posts on various forums, I was finally able to find a solution, at least for my particular situation.
Apparently, with the latest Windows 10 (Home, 64 bit) update it somehow, in some Microsoft's programmer infinite wisdom, decided that their generic display driver works better than, and should replace, Intel's display driver for its own chipset that was already installed and working properly before the Windows update. At the advice of a poster on another forum (forgot which one), I updated the Microsoft driver with one from Intel, which allows my laptop to recognize the HDMI port again. Now I'm back to enjoying streaming videos from Netflix and Amazon through my big screen once more.
Here's what I did (your mileage may vary):
- Right click "This PC" icon on the desktop
- On the drop down menu, click on the first "Properties" selection (not the "Properties" on the bottom of the list, which in and of itself is also confusing - again, another brilliant MS programmer move, but I digress)
- Click/select "Device Manager" on the left column of the screen
- Click "Display adapters". If nothing shows up, go to "View" on the menu tab above, and click "Show hidden devices"
- Right click the appropriate display adapter that's showing to bring up a pop-up menu.
- Click update driver and follow the ensuing directions - in the update driver wizard, choose the option to go to the web and find the latest manufacturer's display driver. Finish installing the driver update.
This should fix the problem with the HDMI port. At least it'd worked for me.
Best of luck to all who were afflicted by this Microsoft's programmer's oversight or over zealous promote of Microsoft products!
First, try restarting your graphics driver:
Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B
If that does not work...
Press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Display adapters
Right click the current display adapter
Click Properties
Click Driver tab
Click Rollback driver if the option is available
If not
Right click the current display adapter
Click Uninstall
Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.”
Exit Device Manager
Restart
Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.
You might need to update the display driver from the manufacturer of your computers website.
If you have an nVidia, AMD ATI video card or Intel HD graphics installed, you can download the latest drivers from their website.
First, determine what type of graphics you have installed.
Press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Display adapters
Once you have determined the graphics driver, go the vendors website and search for the driver in the download section:
Intel - Downloads for Graphics Drivers - Drivers & Software - Intel
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/80939/...
nVidia - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
AMD ATI - Download Drivers - AMD Support
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
Some of these sites offer autodetect options.
There seems to be some early adopter issues at this time with Windows 10 1803, if you can, I recommend you downgrade to your previous version until the Spring Creators Update matures with future cumulative updates.
Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > under Go back to my previous version of Windows 10, click Get started.
or
Press Control + Alt + Delete
Click Sign out
At the Sign In screen, hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen
Continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart
Continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears
Click Troubleshoot
Click Advanced options
Click Go back to the previous version of Windows
Windows Update might attempt to upgrade to Windows 10 1803 again. See instructions how to block it:

Hi,
- Ctrl Shft B didn't work
- Power resetting didn't work
- Uninstalling and updating graphics driver with Windows Updates didn't work
- Manually installing graphics driver didn't work
- Rolling back to previous version of Windows works.
The problem is not my graphics card driver.
The problem is the Windows Update.
I'm very tired of having to do this after every update.
Windows 10 is a mess. I truly despise it and the person in charge of this magnificent garbage should be held accountable for the misery they have brought upon the human race
My name is Jan, I’m an Independent Advisor. Press Windows key + P and select "Extend". If that didn't work. Most likely the issue is caused by the graphics driver. Try to uninstall and reinstall the display driver to reset the settings and redetect all Display devices. If this happens after the update, try each method below.
- Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. You will hear a beep and the display should blink while it attempts to refresh the screen
- Power reset your computer. Press and hold the power button on your device for 10 seconds to turn it off, then unplug your adapter. After 30 seconds, plug your adapter back in and restart your device.
- Uninstall the graphics card driver and let Windows download the driver using Windows update.
Press Windows key + X
select device manager.
Expand display adapter
then right-click on your graphics card
then Uninstall all graphics driver drivers.
restart your laptop.
Then open Windows Update then click Check for updates.
It should download the latest graphics driver and install it.
- Manually reinstall the graphics driver. Download the latest driver from the Manufacturer site and install it. Also, try the older driver if the latest driver didn't work. If you have an Nvidia or AMD graphics select perform clean installation when installing the driver.
UPDATE: Solved! Check the comments for the solution that worked for me
Hey all,
I've been trying to connect my laptop (ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT-BQ613T) to either my second monitor or my tv screen through HDMI. This has worked perfectly fine in the past, but after I updated it to windows 11, it stopped working. I've tested both the cables and the screens with other devices, and they work, so I don't think they're the problem.
When I plug in the laptop, there does appear to be something happening - at the very least, the monitor lighting up a bit, but then saying 'no signal' anyway. Similarly, when I unplug the cable, the laptop screen turns black for a second. It seems like there's not really any signal being sent through the cable. If I go to the multiple displays settings and click 'detect', it says 'we didn't find another display'.
I've tried a restart, and I've tried updating the display adapter drivers, but windows said that they were already up to date. I've also tried changing the display frequency to either 60 or 40 Hz, but no difference.
I'm not sure what to do next - I'd prefer not to mess with reinstalling the entirety of windows 11. Does anyone have an idea? Please let me know if you need any more info from me. Thanks!
Updated Windows 11 to version 25H2 yesterday and now my HDMI port will not function at all. This is not the first time a Windows update creates this problem.
When trying to revert back to the previous Windows version, however, I read in Settings/System/Recovery that this option is simply not available for my PC... I find it weird since I do believe that was the solution used in the previous iterations of this problem!
Other useful informations:
-
GPU is Intel UHD Graphics 620 (driver is up to date);
-
This is not a problem with the HDMI cable;
-
HDMI is connected to a TV screen.
Any help is appreciated :)
I recently encountered an issue with my Lenovo laptop featuring AMD internal graphics, where it failed to detect an external display connected via USB - C to HDMI cable.
Despite trying various solutions such as reinstalling drivers, rolling back to manufacturer drivers, using a new USB-C to HDMI cable, and performing a Windows 11 factory reset, the problem persisted since October 2024.
What ultimately resolved the issue was powering down my laptop by holding the physical power button for one minute. Upon powering it back up, Windows 11 immediately auto-detected my external display. Pressing the Windows key + P allowed me to switch between the desired external display modes as before the problem occurred.
Hi, I have exactly the same issue. The USB-C port works fine if I use a USB-C to HDMI adaptor, so I know the cables and monitor are fine. Despite updating all drivers etc, I cannot get the HDMI port to start working again. I presume that the issue is that the laptop is no longer sending a video/audio signal to the HDMI port for some reason....
If anyone is having similar problems, I ended up fixing it by going to:
> Settings
> System
> Recovery
> "Go Back" to previous version of Windows
Instead of uninstalling parts of the update this completely uninstalled the latest Windows update and reinstalled the previous version. My laptop now identifies monitors connected through the HDMI Port.
Really needs a fix from Windows HDMI's are not obsolete.
Hello!
Maybe the Video Driver has updated with Windows. Do a Clean Reinstall of the Video Driver using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).
- Go to your video card manufacturer's website (Links below) > Search for your video card or processor > Download the latest driver.
AMD:
https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers...
Nvidia:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/
Intel:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/downloa...
- If you don’t know which your Video Driver is, press WINDOWS + X > Maximize the window > Select Task Manager > Click the Performance > Take a Screenshot GPU tab.
- Download DDU from the website below. Click *** Download DDU "Installer" ***.
https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.ph...
- Install DDU.

I was reluctantly forced to update my windows 10 (OS build 19045.6332) because software that I need, was updated and needed a certain windows update. Afterwards my main audio that I use (display speakers through HDMI) doesn't work anymore. These go through my graphics card (Nvidia high definition audio).
My headphones plugged in into the motherboard and some "emergency external speakers" that I tested, all work fine like usual.
When I check the default sound device setting, it shows a moving "audio bar" as if there would be sound, but again no sound actually comes out. I've tried reinstalling, uninstalling drivers for both Nvidia, Realtek and also rolling back the windows updates. All of it with no luck.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Greg.
First of all, update BIOS to ver F.46:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/hp-15-da00...
Adiditonally, HP does not support Windows 11 on this device so I am not sure how much your issue relates to that.
Nevertheless,
Remove the Display drivers completely and Install the newest copy of the driver, available from the OEM or the GPU maker. The steps for it are here:
https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2022/02/troubl...
Eventually, after Windows restarts, check for Windows updates.
Afterwards, the installation, see if your issue is resolved.
