Is NatGeo still good?

Part of the reason that I'm me, approaching 40, is because of all the educational opportunities Apple provided to my school. Computers, the software, etc. and it's why I am still passionate about creativity. NatGeo could do the same but with adventure, conservation, and exploration. Part of NatGeo's 'problem' is the ownership structure. It's complicated. And that's what's spread thin - a lot of people with ideas and boards to make happy. Many mouths. The other problem is the internet. I grew up before it, and I'm not old, but there was a clear print industry and it was massive. And it was awesome, and it was how we got our information. The world is bigger now, and so more books might be sold, but it used to be monolithic. There's just a decline (%wise) for printed content and it affects everything. Books, textbooks, magazines, zines, etc. but I do think we'll rebound - because a growing portion of the internet is 'fake' or 'bots' or like very clearly augmented content. and I'm witnessing in real life my friends and family kind of go back to how the 90s were. Books, physical media, etc. I'm seeing a boomerang back to pre-internet stuff and it's awesome. "Can't be bothered with online now." Social media, for Nat Geo, I don't think would be a viable path to growth - they're already an institution. I think that in-person outreach and establishing themselves as "We're here. We're wild. Want to go on an adventure? Let's go." in towns and communities would be great. Which leads me to my suggestion: Nat Geo should sponsor camps, retreats, basically anything youth development wise. We need stuff in the USA to aspire to, and things that bring community together. More on reddit.com
TIL In 2023, National Geographic Magazine cut 17 editorial positions, including all of the publicationโs staff writers, and editors who has been on staff for 40 years. The magazine still had more than 1.7 million subscribers at the end of 2022
a lot of magazines now are just skeleton crews publishing from their own archives. More on reddit.com

Currently going through several National Geographic publications (including the maps) from 1982-87 with my son. The photography is amazing. An awesome publication. More on reddit.com
