HOW IS NATURAL STONE FORMED?
Stone is developed when one or more minerals coalesce into a solid form. There are 3 main categories of natural stone: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. Sedimentary stone are formed by mineral deposits on the ocean floor, or other bodies of surface water, that accumulate to create rock beds then bond together through pressure and heat. Limestone and travertine are examples of sedimentary stone. Metamorphic stone are stones that have changed (morphed) through heat, pressure and mineral deposits into another type of stone. Examples are marble, quartzite, slate, and soapstone. Igneous stone

Talk me into or out of Natural stone tile floors
Concrete is out, as it would involve reinforcing the subfloor and possibly foundation If concrete is out, natural stone is probably out. Deflection rating required L/720 while regular tile still requires L/360. Also, natural stone has one HELL of an upkeep requirement, can get stained (in the bad way), and is insanely hard to draw those stains back out. Another option could be vinyl planking (personal preference is glue down as the click-lock stuff can have some serious expansion/contraction with surface temperature swings). Has almost all of the advantages of tiles (and some) with much less downsides. As far as actual tile goes, there are porcelain options out there with a slightly grippier texture to them, or there are products out there that can add a bit more grip to them post-install. I have to convince clients multiple times a week that natural stone is not a good idea in any area that gets wet or is subject to high traffic...so many nice porcelain and quartz options available today that require minimal maintenance. More on reddit.com

I have natural flagstone flooring in my basement (i.e., actual stones, not tile). Can anyone help me learn how to take care of it?
My wife's parents had slate flooring which was identical to this. She says that her dad used this polish and sealant because both flagstone and slate are porous and absorb things. Here is a link for maintenance she had found before. More on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Talk me into or out of Natural stone tile floors
January 10, 2018 -

Planning a renovation/ addition, and one of the greatest wants is to have a seamless indoor/ outdoor feel. Based on what I've learned to date, the two flooring options that work inside and outside well are stone tile and concrete. Concrete is out, as it would involve reinforcing the subfloor and possibly foundation. This would extend throughout the great room (kitchen, and living/ dining room), guest bah, entryway, back deck and small front porch.

I'm wary of tile for several reasons: loud, cold, shatters glass, and most crucially will hurt whenever my toddler takes a tumble. Rugs can mitigate some of that, but then where is the indoor/ outdoor cohesiveness? Radiant heating has been mentioned, but given that it never gets that cold it's doubtful we would incur the expense. Then there's the question of how slippery it gets when wet. Does every spill become a hazard?

On the other hand, it will look great. Easy to maintain and clean. Durable. Bedrooms & toddler's play area are hardwood and will remain. A new master will probably use engineered hardwood or possibly laminate (for budget reasons).

Which factors should weigh? And question for all out there with natural stone tile floors: how do you like them, and do you see any particular issue with children in the mix.
