Fair to good credit. Had the secured card that didn’t “graduate” after 6 months. got denied for a cashrewards card. Have my VA payments set up to NFCU (though they havent come in for this semester yet) and no collections, negative marks or super high utilization usage. Went to discover and they approved me for one of their top cards, unsecured. not really a complaint but more of a data point.
Approval took seconds and within seconds, Credit Karma messaged me, that my TransUnion took a 9 point hit for hard inquiry. Sometimes drops are so worth it, 😂
So I have been seeing many posts about the Navy Federal credit cards and the cashRewards card specifically. I have Chase Sapphire Preferred because of their limited 100k bonus points special (easy to get for me because I used it for taxes and other small things). But I wanted to see if it is worth it to have the Chase card and the cashAwards card. What are the differences between them?
Background… I’ve been with Navy Federal for a little over a year, with deposits coming in. A few months back, I tried out the $500 pledge loan “hack” and paid it off recently. Got a preapproval letter for the CashRewards Plus, decided to take a chance, and applied.
So here’s where I’m at: I’ve got 4 hard inquiries (was planning to remove 3 before applying), a 789 credit score, credit age of 4 years+, 3% utilization, no derogatory marks, good payment history, and 12 active accounts (might add more soon).
I’m not 100% sure what to do with the extra funds yet. Could go towards smart investments, maybe an emergency fund, or just as backup while I’m in college working on building high-income skills. Hoping to land a good-paying role soon, and maybe I’ll put some toward something fun if there’s room.
Any thoughts, opinions, or advice on how to move forward would be appreciated!
Approved yesterday for the Navy Federal Cash Rewards card- $25,000 !!
I absolutely want the More Rewards but went for the CR because I wanted the famed second-card-monster-limit on the MR. Never thought I would get it on my first card with them.
I didn’t see too many data points for my situation on a Navy Fed first card.
New credit file, I didn’t do any credit things for well over 10 years. No baddies on reports.

I had read about Navy doing eligibility audits, I had not been asked for proof of Military affiliation when I applied for membership. I sent a message with proof of eligibility to make sure I didn’t have any problems down the line. Hopefully that shows responsibility and built trust?
I read something about Navy liking Credit Union relationships, I have been a member of Wings Financial Credit Union for over 2 years, in good standing. Not sure if CU’s share info...
I hope that’s everything. I have no idea what got me such an incredible first card limit but I am flying high!!!
Congratulations on your initial high credit limit!
Just a heads up if you don’t know, any CLIs for NFCU over $25,000 are a hard pull as far as I know, but Can go up to $50,000! ($80,000 on the Flagship Rewards)
Also, you can request a new credit card 91 days/3 full statements from your last card application/approval.
Good luck with the MoreRewards!
Edit: Sounds like NFCU CLIs over $25,000 aren’t hard pulls
Sheesh! What a first credit limit!
My NFCU card is my oldest credit card account (12 yrs, 3 mos), and is my highest credit limit, but it's only at $11k (my Chase cards have caught up a bit, I have a couple with $10k limits). As far as I can recall, that NFCU card always been $11k, but I just don't remember if it ever went up or down (I'd believe it, my credit was all over the place in that decade; thanks economy).
I'm at 3/24 and was looking to grab an Amex Gold and then stay at 4/24 for a while, but maybe I should be considering a new NFCU card. I prequalify for all of them, and have for months now. Que interesante . . .
I WAS JUST APPROVED FOR NFCU’s VISA TRAVEL REWARDS CARD W/ A 9.99% APR AND $25,000 CREDIT LIMIT
I’m 19 y/o and just got approved for my forth credit card! My other 3 cards + limits are the Apple Card w/ $1750, Chase Freedom Unlimited w/ $1500 and Chase Freedom Flex w/ $2100. All have an APR between 21%-26% (not that it matters.) Does anyone know WHY I was approved for such a high amount and the lowest APR on this card? (I also have an auto loan w/ Navy Federal and I’ve always paid on time and even half of the principle off.) Still, they seem to have quite a bit of trust in me, seeing as I’ve only got 1.5 years of credit history under my belt. I’m lost and excited at the same time. I wanted this card because I plan on traveling abroad in June for a year or so, and with no foreign transaction fees, 3x points on all travel and 2x on everything else, it was a heck of a deal! There is a $49 annual fee after the first year (which is free) but I’m going to use this as my main card so the points will pay for that very fast. Also, knowing NFCU, they’re likely to wave the annual fee. Also, keep in mind, this is only 2.5 months after getting denied for a Capital One card but approved for the Freedom Flex. WHY THOUGH!? I 10/10 recommend NFCU if you are eligible to be a member!
NFCU is excellent! They looked at your auto loan history in combination with your credit score. They also factor in your account activity which helps younger people establishing credit. They’re pretty generous with their credit limits (up to 50k) and they offer excellent rates.
Been an NFCU member for 30 years. Great company! Started my credit history with a student visa and converted to a regular visa after graduation. I don’t carry a balance on my card, but they have my mortgage at 2.0%.
Hello! So a little bit about me: I am an active duty marine, 3 years time in service. I’ve had Navy Federal since I joined. I’m married to another service member as well.
So a few months ago I made a few of what I assume to be pretty ignorant decisions; I applied for 4 different credit cards online in the same night. I did not get approved for any of them. My uncle in law gave me some gold ole advice, saying “well you don’t have credit anyway, why not apply for a bunch and see if you get approved”. He also told me to download the Experian app to check my credit. A few days after this happened I checked my app and had multiple inquiries. Alongside these inquiries we also had one from an attempt at getting approved for a mortgage (moving out of our apartment) and another apartment lease. So I think a total of 6 inquiries at this point.
Before this happened I wasn’t even able to create a credit karma account because of my thin file, always told to pay everything in cash... One thing to note, my wife had gotten approved for and received a Capital One Quicksilver card in January, adding me as an auth user. She hasn’t even activated the card yet. We applied and got approved for a lease last week with her credit alone, which posted on credit karma a few days ago as 665.
Well... now it is March, all of my inquiries were early February. I wanted to go to Navy Federal and apply for a card in person. Once I’m there they applied for a Cash Rewards card. I got approved for it immediately, getting the lowest APR and a CL of $25,000. How did this happen? I still don’t have a credit score on CK or Experian App. Was it maybe income? We each pull a little over $56k a year, and have been paying a rent of $2500 each month for a year. How did I get approved?
Navy Federal is EXTREMELY generous with credit for their members and this is rather common. They are an excellent CU to do business with and their credit offerings are all great.
With that being said don’t expect anything near that CL from other lenders. NFCU is a unicorn but if you treat them right they will treat you better.
They kinda know you're likely not gonna lose your current job. Also I like to joke they give out credit like drunken sailors. I have 70k total in credit lines with them that I just keep for emergencies since the aprs are low. Just request a credit limit increase in the app once. Aquarter or so and they'll give you another 5 or 10k.
I have had an 850 credit score for about 4 months now. (Some times it goes down 2 points then up again). Yesterday I decided to call and ask it they would just switch my reward plus too the flagship and they said yes!! They didn't even run anything. The only thing that changed was the interest rate went to 14.99% which is the lowest they offer with that card... boo. Could be worse. (I still have another card with them that is only 9.47% for emergencies.) The credit limit is pretty substantial but the rep suggested I ask for an increase. 🤔 I am not sure i would need that much but for utilization, maybe I will. Ohhh and I also paid off my house this morning. 🤣 Today is a great day!
i recently opened up a navy federal account mostly to get a auto loan but i also want to build my credit up, it’s at 718. a family suggest instead of applying for the credit card use self credit builder instead but i hear bad things about it and im scared to close it cause im already a month in… any advice?
I am considering getting the Navy Federal secured credit card to help fix and build my credit. I would just like to ask if anyone here has had good experiences with them and if the graduation process is easy or if they give you the runaround?
A little over 2 years ago my wife decided we needed to have a local banking option. We typically have banked with Usaa but with a NFCU down the street we decided to open with them. We went in person moved 25k into a savings account and opened a checking account with 2500 for emergencies. The banker asked if we would like a credit card and we said yes. Well they approved us for $1,000!!!! Currently we carry $0 on cards with a score range 720-760. Well fast forward to now, still have 30k in checking / savings with them as well as we have taken out 2 car loans as well. 1 was 30k and is paid off and the other is still active with 38k left on 64k loan. I think it’s time they give us a better card but I am worried I’ll waste a hard pull
Current lines open in my name only Usaa visa 14,200 limit 16 years open Chase 12,300 2 years open Amex 26,500 1.5 years open Bank of America 5,000 3 years open And a capital one @2,000 5 years open
No revolving balances, 4-7k monthly spend.
Should I go in person and talk to a banker or take my chances online again??
Thanks in advance!
Thanks everyone, Applied for their amex more rewards,
Approved 25k @ 12.99apr
WAY better than the 1k limit on the first card..
Appreciate the advise from you folks.
NFCU is known for MONSTER second card limit. As long as you’ve had 3 FULL statements (25+ days on statements) on your first card, you can apply for the second. Also after that time, you can request a Credit Limit Increase. Ask for at least 8k (max increase they may give you).
Im a young 20s guy with a 760ish credit score. I’m proud of what I got knowing what stops me from going higher is the age of my accounts. Have a 100% debt payment history. Decided to invest in this card since I read benefits and saw 3x points of travel. I plan to travel a lot here soon. Is this a good card? Was my approved Credit line amount and APR good? This is my second credit card ever and wanted to get opinions.
About a week ago my secured credit card graduated from a $500 to $700 credit limit to a now unsecured 2k limit.
I called to ask if it’s too soon to apply for the flagship & they told me I need a total of 5k Credit limit across navy fed specifically to qualify.
That is something I definitely never heard of before. Has anyone heard of anything like that before ?
703 equifax, 657 experian, 694 TransUnion.
Not the best of credit profile, getting better still working on it, should I try for a different card and make my way up or try and go straight to the flagship ?
I have a credit card with $3000 limit but the interest rate is a little high. Applied for the NFCU cash reward card and they did this limit? Wasn't wanting such a high limit honestly. We are credit card aware and don't even come remotely close to the limit. We are financially responsible.
I’m looking at credit cards from Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) and would love to hear your opinions on their various credit card offerings.
Specifically, I’m looking at the following cards:
Navy Federal More Rewards American Express:
-
3X points at restaurants and on food delivery
-
3X points at supermarkets
-
3X points on gas and transit
-
1X points on everything else
-

Visa Signature Flagship Travel Rewards:
-
3X points on travel

Visa Cash Rewards Plus:
-

I’m particularly interested in:
-
The rewards and benefits you find most valuable.
-
Any issues or downsides.
-
How these cards compare to others.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Just opened an account. Im 19, just have a debit card with another bank, no credit, no experience using one or how it works, i want to start building credit so i can apply for a car loan in the future, whats the best option for me that i can use? Ask any questions that i can answer to help you help me :)
What's the best daily credit card option?
We currently have a few between capital one, discover and American Express but im thinking it might be nice to have a NF one so its all in one place.
It'll be used for groceries, gas, just everyday things- nothing crazy. Ive looked and I just cant decide on the benefits.
