r/NavyFederal on Reddit: Told I'm not entitled to a provisional credit
June 1, 2023 -

5/24/23-

Long story short, I fell victim to a phishing scheme 11 days ago.

Individual fraudulently obtained my info and took over my online banking and transferred all money to another account within Navy Federal. It was $5000.

I called Navy federal within 20 minutes of it happening and had to get entirely new account numbers and debit cards.

I filed the appropriate claims forms and signed them in ink as requested and they were submitted within 1 business day of the incident to Navy federal.

I was told by the fraud dept that since the person transferred my money to another account within Navy Federal, that its a "P2P" transfer and that the investigation can take up to 90 days and that I will NOT get a provisional credit because that's only for debit and credit card fraud.

I was told if it's determined fraud, I'll get my money back but it can take up to 90 days.

I spent the last 5 hours looking thru Regulation E of the EFTA and to my understanding it doesn't matter if it's a P2P transfer, I'm still supposed to get a provisional credit within 10 business days if the investigation is not complete.

I've been completely drained of all my money and I'm not sure what to do at this point.

EDIT- 6-1/23:

Just an update for anyone searching.

NFCU closed my fraud claim in my favor, and I was given a permanent credit.

Lessons learned-

  1. If your bank calls you, hang up and call the number on the back of your card. I don't care if you're expecting a call from them. Just hang up and call the number on your card.

  2. Don't give out ANY codes over the phone.

  3. Don't be afraid to just cease any phone communications and just go to a local branch. What I went thru for 3 weeks wasn't worth it.

  4. These scammers are so good. You cannot trust anything you see or hear. Err on the extreme side of caution.

This throwaway account is being logged out of. Thank you everyone for the insight. I've learned a valuable lesson. Please learn from my mistakes. I got lucky. I'm only out of some time and a few new gray hairs. It could've been so much worse if I lost my claim and the $5000 that was fraudulently taken from me.

r/NavyFederal on Reddit: Disputing authorized charge with navy federal
August 17, 2024 -

So I was wondering if I disputed a charge that was authorized am I still gunna receive my money back? The charge was to an auto shop that had done 6400$ worth of work on my car(dropped a new engine in it) I made 3 different transactions. 2 1500$ ones and then 3400$. I had to pay the 3000 up front as a deposit for them to get the engine and do the work. The original price the guy had told me was 5445.25 for everything but when I came to pick it up he told me that the total was actually 6400 cuz he had to replace the cv boots and some engine cap thingy. I was a bit shocked cuz I never told him that was ok but I figured it was already done now I couldn’t do anything about it and payed the entire 6400. I drove my car home and it seemed to be okay and the next day when I went to work the check engine light came on again and I started having the same problems as before i brought it in to the shop and when I took it back in to him I believe all he did was clear the light and give it back cuz it took him like 10 mins and he said it was good to go. And of course on my way home it still had the same problems and not long after that my light was back on. And the guy is now refusing to fix it and says there’s nothing wrong with it when the light is still on and I’m still having problems with getting power to the car when I accelerate and I still have smoke coming out of tailpipe. My car runs the same as it did before I paid the 6400$ to fix it. So I was wondering if I would get the money back if I disputed the charge. Would I get a temporary credit or would I have to wait a long time till the investigation is done which could be a long time I’m assuming.

r/NavyFederal on Reddit: Lol why is NFCU so good at disputes.. is it the military in them?
August 27, 2024 -

This entire situation sounds like a joke, but hear me out. I just sent in a dispute over a $300 purchase of a 5-year stock of inhaler medicine. Someone got access to my card to purchase medicine to go to their own house I believe since I never even received said medicine. I filed a fraud complaint to the doctor's office it came from and tried to put in a demand for a refund (after explaining the situation, I have severe asthma but the medicine the person purchased isn't for me.) and they denied my demand. I sent in a dispute with NFCU 3 hours ago after I just about had it with that company. Decided to stop playing nice and just got the money back.. It's my first time having any issue with anyone over money so I'm so grateful NFCU did that for me. I didn't know they were that efficient and quick though.

Edit: I think the refund just got permanently instated for me to all those who notified me it’s a credit back. Thanks for helping me out with letting me know it’s just a credit at first.

r/NavyFederal on Reddit: Questions about a dispute
April 24, 2025 -

Long story short Ive got a dispute open for a sizable amount (over 5k). It isn't a fraudulent transaction perse, so it was not filed as fraudulent. This was on my debit card not a credit card.

According to debit card disclosures from Navy Fed it doesn't fall under normal reg e dispute regulations and thus a provisional credit is not required to be given. All of the research I have done (mostly googling) seems to point to all disputes falling under reg e disputes.

I have passed 10 business days since the dispute has been filed and any and all navy fed CS reps are stating that it doesn't qualify for a provisional credit. Can anyone provide insight as to why this wouldn't fall under reg e disputes? Or how debit card disclosures can override what seems to be an sure thing?

r/interiordefine on Reddit: Has anyone successfully disputed their charge that banks with navy federal credit Union?
March 10, 2023 -

Has anyone had success getting their money refunded who banks with navy federal credit Union? We bought a $4000 couch 11/29/22, just found out about all this insane bullshit today when I checked the order status to see they are just not going to proceed with my order. Did some more research to find they did this to thousands of people knowingly. Seriously fuck these cockroach piece of shit scammers. When I looked at navy Federal’s charge dispute policy it says they don’t cover authorized transactions. I’m in the process of filling the charge dispute but I’m worried they won’t be able to do anything because even though this was a scam, I did authorize the purchase. Any advice or suggestions help. Thanks.

r/NavyFederal on Reddit: Navy Federal debit dispute has me looking for a new CU
September 16, 2024 -

For context: I have been a NF member for 11 years and all my family are members. I have had only good experiences up until this point.

On May 31, I went to withdraw $1000 for my rent money at a NF ATM only building in Fontana. The machine malfunctioned as it was giving me the bills and it took $700 out of my hands and left me with $300.

I called NF, got my claim and figured I’d be good in a few weeks…WRONG.

It’s now September, my claim has been denied twice by NF on the basis they investigated themselves and found nothing wrong. In my plethora of phone calls, I realized the investigation team fumbled the ball and all the representatives I spoke with needed to call them for clarification and could not figure out why I didn’t have my money back.

They all had me send in app messages with my picture posted above and all the responses I received were “we investigated the machines and found no money missing.”

I spoke to someone on Friday for over an hour and again this morning and they gave me no other options and would not escalate me further.

Does anyone have any advice? I’m thinking of leaving NF for a different credit union cause I’ve never been so upset with my bank before. Thanks for any advice.
