Hi, I am trying to figure out the higher US educational system when it comes to athletes. So, in the case of WNBA, I have found information on who uses to play for which college. My question is - are they doing some kind of degree at colleges or oriented towards building a professional career in basketball? Let me rephrase that - if you enroll into a certain college via scholarship and play basketball, do you have to attend classes and get your BA degree in a certain field, thus staying with the team for a minumum od two/three years? Thank you!

You have to attend classes but there’s no specific degree requirement (other than that you graduate and maintain good academic standing). Some players have psychology degrees, other business, other communications, and I’m sure there are more (especially at the mid major level where players are almost certainly not going pro). The only thing I can think of is that teams might encourage players towards certain ‘easier’ majors, or ones that have class sessions that better accommodate their playing schedules

If their vocation are sports, why would they be expected to be academically sucessful too? And even if they're not, why even force them to pretend like they care about getting a degree? Because their vocation isn't sports, officially. It's college, and they just happen to be really good at sports on the side, which is where pro athletic teams go to find talent. It's a bit convoluted, but universities are there for education, not athletics, and getting onto a universities sports team is by no means a guarantee of going pro.

The cast majority of college athletes don’t play professionally. The majority of professionals don’t make a lifetime of money. So the need a vocation for after sports. For football there is huge difference in a college freshmen at 18 and rookie NFL players at 21-22 in terms of body make up.
