r/askcarsales on Reddit: North Carolina Used Car Sales Tax 7%?
July 18, 2025 -

We are looking to buy a used car in Madison, North Carolina. We are out of state. They sent us the paperwork and it has the sales tax at 7%. When we look it up online, it says the sales tax should be 3%. “In North Carolina, when you purchase a used car, you will be subject to a statewide 3% sales tax, officially referred to as the Highway Use Tax. This tax is based on the actual purchase price of the vehicle, whether you buy it from a dealership or a private seller.

Is there anyone in the area that can expand on this? Is the dealership wrong? What’s also funny… is the number they provided is $200 more than what our calculators show it should be at 7%. 😅 So we’re now a little hesitant.
