[ MODIFIED to use the terminology 'nested functions']
Hi Sterling,
You can define nested functions within other functions as in the following example.
function z = xsixth(x)
z = xsquare(x).^3;
function a = xsquare(b)
a = b.^2
end
end
Here the nested function xsquare is local to the function xsixth, and calling xsquare from the command line results in an error. If for some reason you need the output of (in this example) xsquare, you can either define it as a separate function and no longer a nested function or do something like the following
function [z y] = xsixth(x)
z = xsquare(x).^3;
y = xsquare(x);
function a = xsquare(b)
a = b.^2
end
end
with the extra output y pulling out the result. Answer from David Goodmanson on mathworks.com

A nested function is a function that is completely contained within a parent function.

The primary difference between nested functions and local functions is that nested functions can use variables defined in parent functions without explicitly passing those variables as arguments.

Hello, I am new to Matlab and did some Googling but couldn't figure this out. I have a few scripts of functions saved, function1, function2, and function3. Each one references the previous. How do I actually run function 3? For example, I have:
fun1.m which reads:
function f=function1(parameters)
stuff
endfun2.m which reads:
function q=function2(parameters)
stuff which includes a function1 command
endfun3.m which reads:
function [results]=function3(parameters)
stuff which includes function2 command
endI'd like to be able to just write function3(parameters). Thanks!

You can certainly nest functions within another function. https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/matlab_prog/nested-functions.html However, the nested functions are only available to the parent function. function [results] = function3(parameters) q = function2(parameters); function q = function2(parameters) f = function1(parameters); ... end function f = function1(parameters) .... end end Good luck

You can just call directly witin one function, for example
disp(hahaha(5));
function A=hello(x)
A= 5*x;
end
function b=hahaha(tv)
b=hello(tv);
end
result will be 5

Programming Patterns – Nested Functions in MATLAB - MATLAB & Simulink
Nested functions are not seen as functions on the matlabpath and therefore do not clutter the overall namespace. As a result, M-files created with nested functions are often more robust to environmental changes. Because the nested function can access and change variables in the outer scope, there is less need to copy data, which can strain memory capacity if data sizes are large.
