Normie Bluetooth headphone can only either do low latency but crappy audio (the one you use for phone call), or high quality but high latency (the one you use for music), so this time they do have to limit it to AirpodsPro 2 and 3

I have the iphone 16 pro max, and the air pod pro 2's. I have updated everything to ios26, and verified that my airpods have the latest firmware version. However, I have ben unable to figure out how to use this new live translate function with the air pods. Has anyone been able to get it to work, and willing to share? TIA
Edit - SOLVED! The issue was with my Air Pod Pro 2's. I had to reset them tin order for them to update to the newest firmware properly. Once they did, the Live Translation setup popped up immediately and I was able to start downloading the translation languages.
edit 2 - Yes, you do need Apple Intelligence enabled. If your phone does not support Apple Intelligence, this feature wont be present or functional at all. Another thing we have found is that you must have the Apple Translate app downloaded, and then download the individual languages to your phone in order for the Live Translate to work.

There are just a few languages that are supported. I have tried Spanish. My wife is American, she speaks Spanish pretty well. I am Russian - I know a little bit of Spanish. But obviously the easiest one for us Russian-English are not supported. So we just tried Spanish-English and I was impressed.

It works with existing AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 too. I have some some quick tests with Spanish language videos and it seemed to work pretty well. I was impressed.

To explain why I find this relevant, I currently have an I phone 14 pro (no intelligence) and an Macbook pro with apple intelligence support. I'd love to be able to use the macbook as a processing base for this feature and I don't see why it wouldn't work. It has the relevant hardware (chips, mics etc.)
I'd like to buy the airpods, but this feature is a make-or-break to be honest for me, as my Pro 2's are fine enough.

It's more about the software. It works with older AirPods. The translation doesn't happen inside the AirPod though. "Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 and later," Apple says. Apple will likely add this feature to MacOS at some point in the future.

Sitting here waiting for an automatic update that never seems to come. It's been well over 30 minutes in the case, within bluetooth range of the phone (15 Pro) running iOS 26 while connected to power.

I loaded the update just fine, but since I work from home, and only have my dogs around, I haven’t had a chance to test it out yet. I used a technique that I learned somewhere else, and used a USB-C to Lightning cable to connect my Air Pod Pro 2 directly to the USB port on my iPhone, and after 10 minutes, the update was done.
