Yes, the age of the car matters. Cars fall apart and get more expensive to maintain as they got older, regardless of mileage. $2-4k CAD is pretty much the floor for running vehicles. The cars at the price are going to be on their last legs, for the most part. It's usually worthwhile to spend more up front on a used car. Buying the cheapest car you can find isn't that cheap in the long run. Hondas and Toyotas are great used cars, but not so much at the very bottom of the market where they're typically really run through. At that price, you should look for less desirable stuff, but still somewhat reliable stuff: Buick LaSabre, Ford Crown Victoria and first generation Focus, manual transmission Nissan Versas.
