r/photoshop on Reddit: Just updated Photoshop, what has happened to gradient tool?
November 27, 2023 -
Hi, animation student here, I’m pretty experienced in Photoshop, but I’ve recently updated to Photoshop 2024, and I can’t figure out how to attach my own colours to the gradient tool. When I click the tool, I can only see the default options given. Any clue?

It's a new setup. There should be a dropdown that says "Gradient" and under it "Classic Gradient". You can change to the classic and it will be like the old version. I like the new one because you can edit it more while it's live on the canvas. But I switched back to Classic because it's faster and easier for me with my type of work.
I seem to be the only one who hates the new gradient tool...
Solved.
Apparently you just have to change the tool to "Classic Gradient". Then, for colors, change Method to classic as well.

You are filling the mask with a black-to-white gradient. Whenever you use it covers up whatever was there before. What you want is a black-to-transparent gradient. More on reddit.com
How do i do this gradient?
Well, what have you tried?
More on reddit.com(New to PS) I'm trying to fade the lower background using the gradient tool but it won't let me. I've added a mask to the layer so I'm not what the problem is exactly.
Set the Mode to ‘Normal’ and Opacity to 100% (both in the top bar with gradient tool selected) For a full 0-100% opacity set the gradient to black and white, not grey and white More on reddit.com

How To Use the Gradient Tool in Photoshop
February 21, 2024 - There are many ways to use the gradient tool. These options include being able to apply it as a linear, radial, angle, reflected, or diamond gradient. There are also endless options as to how you can configure the color and transparency options for each of these. Rather than adding a gradient directly to the active layer, create a new layer to work with the gradient. By adding the gradient as a new layer in Photoshop you have whole realms of flexibility to edit it more creatively.

Hi Jane. I am simply not going to recommend this program to my students. The cost vs the amount of bugs, glitches and unecessary changes, compared to other programs out there, do not make photoshop a favorable option anymore. · The only way I would continue to teach this in my classroom is if photoshop allowed its users to revert to the 2019 version. Otherwise, it just isn't worth the time or money for any creative to have to deal with the sheer frustration of a glitchy program.Thank you for your insight on how to revert the gradient tool back. I am however, going to switch back to a previous version entirely (again), as it seems this version has exhaserbated pre-existing issues and I do not wish for my hair to fall out.
