New to Colorado - car registration
State Troopers do VIN Verifications by appointment, the DMV will Transfer your title to Colorado during the registration process.. Show up with your title, the vin verification (Troopers will give you the form filled out), insurance and DL and the'll get you sorted out. I buy most of my cars from out of state and bring em in because local market is inflated for the kinda cars I tend to want.. the process is the same, done it a dozen times. You wont have to pay sales taxes but our registration fees can be pretty damn high for newer vehicles as registration fees are based off MSRP for first 7 years with zero deprecation. Just registered my new car - 700$ for one year. I used to pay 60$/year in ohio. Am I dreaming?
It goes down a little bit each year. It's based on the cost of your new car. It's not like a flat %. I forget the formula, but it does go down a bit each year. More on reddit.com

Colorado Vehicle Registration Renewal Cost - 2022 MYP (For Reference)
Just to add some transparency to how much it costs to renew your vehicle registration in Colorado (Denver). This breakdown is for a 2022 MYP with custom plates ($25 charge for plates). Total cost is $1,015.50 plus 2.5% service fee if you pay online with a credit card. As someone originally from Texas ($75 vehicle registration fee back in the day), this is painful. New vehicle registration cost is outrageous!
That was one of the biggest "Sticker Shocks" of moving to Colorado. I agree with the sentiment that if people are paying that much for regristration, that Colorado should have the best kept roads in the country, not the pot hole derby we currently have. More on reddit.com

October 23, 2024 -

I know I know, been asked a million times. Please bear with me - I’m usually able to figure this kinda stuff out on my own but holy cow, CO seems to make the process as difficult as possible (I’ve registered cars in 2 other states)😵‍💫🤕

Here’s the quick and dirty: car has unexpired tags from WA, purchased car in WA 3 years ago/paid sales tax there, title is from WA (I’m the owner).

Here’s my understanding: need CO DL (done), need CO insurance (done), DON’T need emissions test cuz car is less than 6 years old, need VIN verification form. DMV website states you need to convert an out of state title to a CO one before registering but doesn’t list any instructions - is this done through the VIN verification or is there an additional step?

Is there anything I’m missing or misunderstanding? Are there any places you can get the VIN verification form completed for free? (Results have mentioned dealerships or LE - would appreciate input from someone who’s recently, successfully, gotten it done) And, most importantly, I do NOT have to pay the sales tax again, right? In my research I’ve come across several posts stating people had to pay thousands of dollars to register an out of state car and I will legitimately cry if that’s the case. TIA
