May 23, 2022NHU12A worth over the NHU12S?
I am in the process of upgrading to the U12A from the U12S. I’ve been hitting 90° at full load with my 5800X3D and I expect the extra pipes and heat sink surface with the extra fan to bring down temps at least 5°. I think you should just get the U12A because you may eventually upgrade to a better CPU that needs the extra cooling performance. The U12S was fine for my 3900 but it’s not cutting it with the 5800X3D. More on reddit.com

The U12A is slightly larger, has two more heat pipes (7 vs 5), and a significantly higher cooling rating (169 NSPR vs 129). I always recommend the U12A, if it will fit in your case. More on reddit.com

May 5, 2025NH-U12A versus NH-U12S; question about RAM clearance
I was able to answer my own question by looking up matching builds on PCPartPicker. There are multiple examples that all show the RAM fitting next to the cooler with zero overhang. This one has the clearest photos I could find: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/xtnLrH (There is also one example in which the cooler does overhang the RAM modules, but it's because the builder rotated the cooler 180 degrees. The cooler is asymmetrical.) I hope this helps in case others have the same question in the future. More on reddit.com
