May 29, 2024TIL a children's book called In the Night Kitchen has been called "morally problematic" and has been on many banned book lists in the US because it depicts a cartoon image of a naked baby boy.
I used to read this book to my daughter a lot, and never really thought much about it, then I read somewhere online that people were upset about the bakers being with a young boy, that when he goes in the batter or the milk it's some euphemism for a sexual act. tl;dr- people project their own rotten thoughts onto something innocent. Looking for the animated adaptation of Maurice Sendak's picture book In the Night Kitchen. According to IMDB, it was directed by Gene Deitch, written by Maurice Sendak (obviously), and starred Peter Schickele as the narrator.
I watched it as a child, on a DVD that also contained excerpts from Really Rosie IIRC.
Here is the only stuff I found on YouTube: Someone's YTP that uses footage from the short and the credits.
I have a feeling that the reason it's not readily available would be to do with the controversy surrounding the original book's nudity. No comment on that, but I enjoyed the music as a kid so I would love to hear it again haha.
I'll dig through my old DVDs and if I find it, I'll upload it to YouTube. I have a feeling I won't still have it though, unfortunately. Any help is appreciated.
