r/wildlifephotography on Reddit: Nikon D850 or Canon R6/R7 for wildlife and landscape.
January 7, 2023 -

I have been photographing wildlife for the past few years as a hobby, mainly waterfowl and other birds. I currently own the Nikon P900 which has served well, but I think I am ready to upgrade into something better. I’ve been researching now for months and am struggling between the Nikon D850 and the Canon R6/R7. I haven’t invested in either brands lens or anything else, so I’m starting new. Leaning towards the R7 because it has the crop factor to help reach out, and from what I’ve read the AF is much better for BIF then the D500 or D850. However I like the idea of the full frame for those times when I want to take a landscape photo when I’m out shooting. Is there a Bette way to go? Are Lens options better on one side vs the other? My all in budget for the camera and first lens is $5000-$6000 USD. Any recommendations or advice would be welcome!

r/Cameras on Reddit: R6 vs. Z6 II vs. Z7 vs. D850 vs. 1DX Mk. II
May 13, 2024 -

Hey. I need some help deciding on an upgrade. I've gotten an opportunity to upgrade my setup. As of now, I own a Rebel T7i and an EF-S 18-135 and have been shooting for approximately 2 years, taking event gigs for photography.

My main uses are for events (wedding, party, corporate), portraiture, and nature, as well as architecture when travelling. I am looking to get more into sport photography as well.

Currently, aside from the lens lacking the sharpness I desire, I seem to not have good AF performance, lowlight performance for photography is questionable, MP counts, with my current lens, for nature can be difficult due to cropping. The video is, especially in low light, unusable for sales.

I own a 600EX RT II as well, but from my understanding if I change systems I could still use it off camera with radio, correct?

My research has led me to a variety of places within my budget of U$ 1700,00. I'm fine with purchasing used gear. I'm looking for both a FF camera and a zoom lens such as either 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 or a prime 85 1.4/1.2. I'm open to other suggestions!

My current options lined up are:

Z7 Z6 II 1DX Mark II R6 D850

Can someone offer some wisdom on how to proceed please. I thank you in advance for reading through all of this!

If you are in the USA check Canon's refurb deals. They have been amazing, and the R6 was at a great price. Lenses too, and that's where the major expense will be.

I would recommend the Canon R6, great all round camera for stills, and good for 4k video. Though a 1dxmkii is an interesting proposition, especially as the R6s (20MP) sensor is based on this, the 1D is older, heavier, tougher, but not as advanced (No IBIS, etc) If you purchase an EF RF adaptor, you can pick up high quality EF lenses, for a fraction of the cost of comparable RF glass. Instead of the 24-70 f2.8, i recommend the EF 24-70mm f4 LIS USM, this is consistently sharper than the f2.8 mk1, at all focal lengths and apertures, even in the corners at 24mm, it also has image stabilisation and is lighter and less expensive to buy, the 24-70 f2.8 mk1 is very heavy and has a vault where the focal plane is not flat, if you really really need f2.8, the (more expensive) EF 24-70mm f2.8ii is a better lens than the mk1. Instead of the 85mm 1.4/1.2 the EF 85mm f1.8 is lighter, less expensive, very sharp, and faster focussing, another inexpensive lens worth having is the EF50mm 1.4 USM. A less expensive option for the 70-200mm F2.8 IS THE 70-200mm f4 L IS (mk1) The above kit (R6 EF RF adaptor, 24-70 f4, 85mm f1.8, 70-200 f4 IS L could be had secondhand for about your quoted budget. For a bit more money a 70-200mm f2.8ii or iii is would be useful for you and a 100-400mm is usm ii good for sports/ wildlife or where you need more reach than the 200mm
