Hi everyone, I’ve been into photography for quite a while now. In recent years, I’ve turned it more into a hobby/blog and mostly shoot for myself, focusing on travel and landscape photography, with occasional portraits. I spend about 85% of my time shooting photos and only 15% shooting videos.
When I chose my current setup (Canon R6 Mark II + RF 24-70mm f/2.8 + EF 135mm f/2.0), I also considered the RF 24-105mm f/4 L, as that lens seemed much better suited for travel and landscape photography. However, I found the image quality from it to be quite average for an L-series lens, especially given its price.
At the same time, I’ve heard a lot about Nikon’s 24-120mm f/4 S lens. It’s praised for its excellent image quality, and it’s noticeably lighter than my current 24-70mm. Nikon also already has third-party lenses available for its full-frame system. I also like Nikon’s line of f/1.8 prime lenses—they’re better in terms of image quality compared to Canon’s f/1.8 lenses, which are more budget-oriented. I’d use the 35mm f/1.8 for portraits and low-light photography.
According to Reddit, Nikon is still catching up with others in terms of autofocus performance on fast lenses (AF might miss the eyes) and video autofocus, even on cameras like the Z6 III and Z8.
As for Sony, I’ve spent some time shooting with an A7 III when I had access to one. Back then, I wasn’t impressed with the screen and EVF—they noticeably affected the user experience. Also, the RAW files sometimes had rather strange colors and generally required more time to process. However, I’ve heard a lot of good things about their lenses, like the 20-70mm f/4 and 24-105mm f/4, as well as the fantastic updated Sigma 35mm f/1.4 (compared to the DSLR era version).
With that in mind, I wanted to ask—should I consider switching systems because of these lenses, or is this just GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and I should stick with my current system?
Which cameras would you recommend I look into? I’ve been considering the Z6 III, though I’ve read that its dynamic range is lower than that of the Z6 II. The Z8 is a bit too expensive for me and seems a bit overkill.
Has anyone already made the switch from Canon R to Nikon Z or vice versa? If so, could you share your experience and context?
I almost was about to start with Canon R6 mark II and building lens set around it. But recently noticed price drop from Nikon.. now difference between R6 II and Z7 II is about 100usd.. ( 2499 vs 2599)
Now confused due to price tag - how Z7 II is good ?.. because it more compared usually to R5.. I was mostly comparing R6ii to z6ii .. and R6 II won for me but due to recent discounts looks z7ii can be an option too.
How Z7 II is with af tracking now after all firmware upgrades in comparison to R6 II?
My worry area is action shoots (runners, kids, birds, dogs) . I guess here R6 II is a winner over z6 ii.. but how Z7 II is going here? Same as z6 ii or a bit better? Rest my scenarios is low light landscapes, street.. portraits.. Almost not going use for video.. i use Panasonic g9 for that. Maybe I should consider R8.. but missing ibis.. that concerns me due to low light and landscapes .. (Not a professional usage)

Staring from almost clean state with new system.. I am a former DSLR Nikon crop shooter. .(I had afs dx, af-d lenses, and third party sigma/Tamron/tokina) But almost all my lenses will not be working well on ftz adapter. That's why am disappointed in Nikon.. and for me will be a clean start...
Hello! i’m needing help in deciding which camera would be best for me. I’ve shot film photography for a while on a canon but i’m not equipped with many lenses (just my 1) so switching to Nikon wouldn’t be a hassle or anything. I take portrait photography and currently do not do any videography if that’s any consolation. I’ve heard that canon doesn’t do third party lenses which has also made me hesitant. I feel like i have decision paralysis right now, constantly researching and continuously feeling stuck in which mirrorless camera to pick… any opinions, recs, or experience you have w either of these cameras would be greatly appreciated!!!
