Decisions Decisions: (Used) Nikon Z7 or Z6? Both come at a steal Price….
I'm a Z7 guy since day1. Im not shooting people or sports. also i run in silent mode so all my shutter clicks are virtual. if i had to guess i have less than 500 actual shutter actuations for the thousands of pictures ive taken. More on reddit.com

Second hand Z5 or Z6 | DPReview Forums
Are there any other compelling reasons to buy a second hand Z6 over a Z5? Click to expand... You don’t have to use XQD cards with the Z6. You can use CFe cards as well, as long as the firmware supports it. I think it was v2 where that started. I suggest downloading and studying the reference guides for both cameras. The Z6 does offer more capabilities. Whether you will ever use them … You mention pre-AI lenses. Do you really mean pre-Auto-Indexing, or do you mean pre-autofocus? Nikon ... More on dpreview.com

used nikon z6 worth it?
If you are set on using full frame, id buy a z6.The z6 wont loose much value anymore and is a fine camera, especially for the work you mention. If you dont have fun with that camera, more expensive gear likely wont solve the issue and you can just sell it at minimal loss. Also, (cheap camera + good lens) beats (good camera + cheap lens), so id rather spend money on lenses. Lenses also last longer. If you then really get into photography, you could get a z5ii in a year or so. It just released and will likely be about 20-30% cheaper by then. More on reddit.com

Any tips on buying a used Nikon Z lens?
If it’s from a shop, for just around 10% cheaper, it should be fine and probably as good as new.  When you get it, inspect the glass and coatings, try adjusting the aperture and focus, and just play around with it.  If it works fine, keep it.  If not, return it. More on reddit.com

November 21, 2024 -

Found a great deal 1000 bucks for Z7 with 50 K clicks and a barely used the Z6 for 700 with 16k clicks. Both come with original packaging, accessories, etc.

Quick preamble: i’m a beginner photographer, who mostly shoots portraits and live events. I have a passion for film, so gradually emerging myself into that area would be nice without switching to a different body.

Would appreciate any input! Tata

EDIT: Did not expect such a turnout. The consensus is pretty obvious so the decision was easy. The Input is much appreciated gentlemen.

The deets: Nikon Z6 with a 24-70mm f4 S and 10k clicks for 820 bucks. Downsides: No accessories and a broken-off HotPlate(Photos at the bottom).

So, all in all I think this was a decent grab. I hope everyone approves as-well.

P.S anyone ever break or otherwise encounter a broken-off HotPlate? Not that flash is essential atm but it definitely would not hurt. Maybe a bracket could provide a workaround fix? Assuming nikon is gonna charge me a hell of a lot more…

r/Nikon on Reddit: used nikon z6 worth it?
April 10, 2025 -

Hi! I'm debating buying a used nikon z6 but not sure if I should just pull the trigger and do it or wait and save up for a z6iii.

A little about me- I am mainly a hobbyist (got my start in pet portraits) but did some freelance editorial work a while back when I was in college. At the time I had a d750 and a 50mm lens and found that although other lenses would have been nice, they were not necessary for the work I was doing. Fast forward a couple of years and life got busy and I stopped taking photos for a while so my camera sat untouched and I decided to sell my gear.

Recently, I've gotten back into photography and have been flirting with the idea of doing it semi-professionally (think engagement photos, family photos, headshots, etc). I've done a few shoots so far but am frustrated by the limitations of my equipment. I am currently using an old crop sensor nikon (not even sure which one it is- my mom bought it in a bundle pack from BJ's probably 15-20 years ago lol) and a used 35mm lens and my biggest complaints are that the autofocus isn't great, the photos are not as sharp as I would like them to be, and I miss the composition of a full frame.

I know that either way I'll have to invest in some better equipment if I want to pursue photography more seriously. In a perfect world, I would just buy a z6iii and either a 35mm or a 50mm and then eventually save up for a 24-70mm and maybe an 85mm and then just stick with that for a long time. However, money is a big consideration and while I theoretically could swing that, I'm not sure it's the smartest investment at the moment.

A used z6 is more affordable (~$800) and then I could pick up either a 35mm or 50mm and work with that for a while and assuming that I could hopefully build up to more steady work, eventually sell it and upgrade. I'm leaning towards doing this as I think that for the work that I'm trying to do this should be sufficient. So I guess my biggest questions are :

a) is $800 for a used z6 in good condition with ~5000 clicks a good deal?

b) do you think I'll be able to sell it back in a few years when I'm ready for another upgrade without taking too much of a loss?

c) does anyone have any other suggestions about what I should do?

I own and use the original versions of both the Z6 and Z7. The only thing I miss on the 1st gen bodies is the ability to mount/use a vertical grip WITH a shutter release. The original Z6 has had several firmware upgrades putting its abilities close to or on par with the Z6II. I've used both bodies for weddings and portraits. I also use the Z6 for real estate work and IMHO it is a great camera for that especially at it's current (used) price-point. I use the Z7 for portrait work and landscapes where I want more resolution. The Z6 makes for good images in low light situations. It offers great dynamic range and low noise w/higher ISO's. Downsides other than the grip issue, is that it's AF does lag when compared w/other manufacturers but it's eye AF works for me quite well. On static subjects it's AF is fine. $800 seems a little high as I've seen good used Z6's go for as low as $600. You may want to look at places like MBP and see if your seller would consider matching their prices. Keep in mind your seller might balk but most reputable on-line resellers also offer some kind of warranty whereas, a private seller may not be able to do that. I'd also suggest that you look for and buy a US model (not grey market) in the event you have to get it repaired by Nikon. As for me, my next upgrades will look something like: Z6 --> Z6II Z7 --> Z8 or Z9 Maybe a ZF at some point where I trade away a couple of my Fuji bodies... Other than the grip issue, I'm pleased with the output/image quality of the Z6. I'm not shooting stuff that moves much so I find the AF adequate for what I do. I also have several Z mount lenses as well as a bunch of F mount stuff. The 85mm F1.8 Z and the 50mm F1.8 Z are both awesome lenses. The 70-200Z is incredible and TBH, I haven't found a native Z mount lens I don't like... I don't have a 35mmZ but instead I use a 35mm F1.8 Tamron w/VC via an FTZ adapter. It has some CA but Lightroom takes care of that. As for a "do it all/everyday carry" lens, I'd recommend the 24-120 F4 Z. Below: Z6 & 85mm 1.8Z w/ambient light
