There are brand new thousand dollar cameras that aren't as good as five year-old $1500 cameras. Pricing isn't about age, it's about features. Cameras aren't wine or crypto. You can sometimes get a lot more technology for less money from a few years earlier. The camera isn't the important part. The lenses are. Figure out what lenses you want, where you can get the most bang for your buck and lenses, and then get the camera body that goes along with those. You'll keep good lenses much longer than a camera body. Answer from enuoilslnon on reddit.com

Honest opinions about the Z50ii?
I have a D5600, D7500, D780, and then bought a Z50 II. It is a fantastic camera. I use it quite a bit, it just delivers. These are my Leipzig trip photos: https://aths.smugmug.com/Weitere-Fotostrecken/Leipzig-2025/i-ThkgF7R/A This is a weekend photo hike: https://aths.smugmug.com/Fotos-eines-Tages/2025-April-der-6/i-Cb63vd3 Not sure if the concept of "camera upgrade" is real though. I bought a second-hand D50 recently and, well, it is a camera. My photography depends not so much if I use D50 or Z50 II, rather if I am inspired and put the work in. Overall though, the Z50 II is the first camera I recommend to almost anyone because with just 4-5 days of getting into it / configuring menues and buttons, you get a camera which just works. Small body but enough grip (I added some heft with the Smallrig plate), it can use many F-mount lenses (AF-S and AF-P, G-type and E-type) with the adapter, and it can use any Z-mount lens, which are superb. One more photo gallery taken with Z50 II: https://aths.smugmug.com/Fotos-eines-Tages/2025-M%C3%A4rz-der-29/i-sWMQ4Nj/A this one using the dinky 16-50 kit lens. More on reddit.com

Bought a Nikon Z50 ii
Great camera. You'll enjoy it once you get past the hurdle of figuring things out. Out of the box, it will work very well but it is all about the customization that you have now, that will seem daunting at first but very hard to give up later. Main thing to figure out (IMO) are the different focus modes you have, including the AI detection options, and the placement/configuration of the buttons all over. White Balance, Focus modes, shutter mode, ISO, all those are really important to know and will help you to make quick adjustments if/when needed. Otherwise, enjoy! If you want geotagging of your photos, you'll want the Snapbridge app on your phone and connect your camera to it. Again, this might be just a "me" thing but I would recommend you getting a screen protector of some sort. I like the tempered glass ones. Might break your heart if you scratch the screen. Only a few bucks, worth it for resale value as well. More on reddit.com

Z50 II a Worthy Upgrade?

Your 80-200 won’t autofocus when adapted to Z mount. Only AF-S lenses will.

Z50 Mark II due to be released in Q2/Q3 2023. Should I wait?
afaik, there is no official announcement just speculation. Same thing as the z6iii/z7iii/z8 etc. If you need it now, get it now. If you want to wait, there's no guarantee it will come when you think it will so you may need to wait even longer. More on reddit.com

r/AskPhotography on Reddit: Convince me why Nikon Z50 II is a bad buy and should go for Sony?
December 14, 2025 -

I've been browsing reviews, YouTube, articles and here and I can't make up my mind.

I've been trying to score either alpha 7 iii or a6400 for under or at $500-$650. It's not happening in my used market space.

Only reason I'm looking for Sony is how amazing reviews people put here, plus support Sigma glass.

I understand it's better to put extra money into lens.

Since, I can't find good used camera deal for Sony, I just refuse, out of principal to pay $900 for camera that came out 5 years ago!

While Nikon z50 ii came out recently and is for 1000. I get it's limited glass support, but does Nikon not have an answer to Sony + sigma 18 50 combo?

I will not be shooting any wildlife or bird. Just casual street photography, and vacation photos of family and stuff. It will be my first camera and want to get a hang of using them, understanding photo editing raw and experimenting shooting couple, etc.

Copy/paste this template into your post and fill it out:

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $1000. $1500 is PUSHING

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? None. Want to get a new camera

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Casual, Street, people, buildings

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both. Mostly photography until I get a gimbal

The Nikon Z50 II adds a color profile button and the AF system from Nikon's higher-end cameras. But this doesn't result in an APS-C Z6III, despite the similarities.

Nikon Z50 Mark II Camera Review – BestLightPhoto BLOG
November 1, 2025 - Shutter Release – The shutter release is classic Nikon DSLR/mirrorless. A slight pressure and then a positive stop to actuate focus/lock exposure and then a little more pressure and the tension breaks to trip the shutter! Rear LCD – Many will be happy with the rear LCD. It is fully articulating. I believe that the Z50II (and the same as the Z 30) rear LCD was designed more for the video shooter in mind, so articulating makes sense with the swing out panel.

Nikon Z50 II – the compact camera I’ve been waiting for - Reed Hoffmann
December 27, 2024 - The original version, the Z50, came out late in 2019 and was a pretty good camera (I had one for about a year). It’s been followed by a couple of other DX bodies, including the Z30, which I use as a webcam. But I wanted a small camera with some of the great new features that Nikon’s Z9, Z8 and now Z6 III offer, and knew it was just a matter of waiting.

r/Nikon on Reddit: Honest opinions about the Z50ii?
May 1, 2025 -

Hello everyone! I'm coming from owning a 14 year old Nikon D90 which has recently had its mirror mechanism give out. I recently discovered the Z50ii (its price point is pretty much perfect for my budget) and would like to see if it would be a nice replacement camera for me. I'm not really looking for the most high-end features, just a nice, sturdy camera to improve my skills on.

What are you guys' main thoughts on the camera? Should I upgrade, or should I pick another model?

EDIT: I got it! Thank you to those who responded with their thoughts! https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/1kc6siq/an_upgrade_from_my_defunc_d90_z50ii/

Nikon Z50II Camera Review | Thom Hogan
Surprisingly, Nikon has basically stuffed most of the Z9 goodies into a slightly redesigned body, making for a feature and performance-packed camera in a sub-US$1000 price. This EXPEED7-based change is at the heart of everything that changes in the Z50II, and it makes the result a far better camera than its predecessor.

Nikon Z50 II: First Impressions
June 19, 2025 - Although those expecting a clear successor to the D500 may be a bit disappointed, I will show you that the Z50 II is actually closer to the D500 than a lot of people think. It’s immediately clear to any human observer with basic zoological knowledge that this is a bird’s head, with its beak partially submerged underwater. Just a few years ago, such a scene would have completely confused AI autofocus algorithms. Not so with the Nikon Z50 II, which had no trouble detecting the eye of this flamingo.
